RAR Files

I continue to find it impossible to run RAR files, despite the advice given in a previous entry.

Does anyone have any other advice how I could proceed?

I suggest you to use the very useful and free program 7-Zip

The main features of 7-Zip
Supported formats:
- Packing / unpacking: 7z, ZIP, GZIP, BZIP2 and TAR
- Unpacking only: ARJ, CAB, CHM, CPIO, DEB, DMG, HFS, ISO, LZH, LZMA, MSI, NSIS, RAR, RPM, UDF, WIM, XAR and Z.
- Localizations for 74 languages


p.s. You cannot play the RAR files using a video player. First you need to unpack (unrar) them and after that you will get a video format file and you can play it using a video player.

Probably superflous, but I use UnRarX, which is for Mac OS X. It is the equivalent of the Windows version.

It works fine, but you always need to be aware of a possible password - listed in the post of the RAR file. Mine will try to UnRAR the file when I double-click the RAR, with each part failing if a PW is required. Even if it fails like that for no PW, simply entering the PW and trying again then works.

Opening Winrar

Can please somebody help me with that:

When I open password protected rar files, in some cases some archives open so you can see the content (well at least file's name) and then you have to enter password (after you want to extract them).

In other cases only a small window pops up at the beginning (to enter password), and you can't see the content at all.

Is there a way to configure Winrar to open this or that way?
