Diet and exercise?

I gained a few pounds over the past few months as well, but that's good because I've actually been too thin. I feel normal now.

I don't have the healthiest of diets, but whatever I eat, I eat in moderation now. Every time I start looking for something to eat, I ask myself, "Am I really hungry or am I just bored?". Sometimes, I'm just bored and I find something non-food related to do.

I replaced all my beverages for water. If the water's cold enough, it'll do for me. Although, I know many people cannot be okay with just water. I only drink soda when it's a special occasion (i.e., going out with friends, party, etc.)

Don't go grocery shopping on a full stomach! Eat a big meal before shopping. Trust me; you'll buy way less food (especially unhealthy foods).

Eat a big breakfast! My breakfast usually keeps me full until about 2 or 3pm. And when I do get hungry, I don't have a big meal. I just eat snacks (nuts...edible nuts, lol...fiber bars, fruits, vegetables, etc.) until it's time for dinner (which is my last, big meal of the day). It took me awhile to adapt to this, but now this is how I roll.

For exercise, try to make it something you actually enjoy. Whatever works for you. I love to roller blade while listening to music or spending an hour on the treadmill while I watch reruns of That 70s Show.

I also make quirky games for physical activity. For example, I take a page out of a book and I make an exercise out of it. Every time there's an "a" or an "e," I lift my left knee as high as possible. Every time there's an "o" or a "u," I lift my right knee as high as possible. For every consonant, I do a squat. For every space, I jump up and open my legs. For every comma or period, I touch my toes. I also have weird poses and movements for random punctuation marks. Haha, I know it's super weird, but it's fun for me, and it works! I force my students to do these activities; at first, they thought I was crazy, but now they get upset when we don't have time for these.

Hopefully, some of these techniques can help you. I want to lose weight as well (because I'm heavier than usual), but I don't want to get too thin. I'm not into super thin.

Reduce as much carbohydrates as you can!
Stop eating in between times!
Pause al least 4 (better 5 hours) between meals!
Move your body!

Best regards. ;)

Hi hammervice,

I am not a nutritionist, but it is a subject that fascinates me.

From what I read between books forums and misinformation, the advice is simple:

a) eat only when you appetite;
b) get up from the table with even a bit of appetite;
c) eat a little bit of everything, favoring fruits and verdua, but without forgetting the other products;
d) Avoid fried and possibly ... McDonald's;
e) Being active, even simple daily walks.
f) if you do not do physical activity, reduce fat, sugar and carbohydrates. If you do sports, you can safely consume, but without excesses.
One important thing! Nothing diets "do it yourself" improvised.
Consult qualified nutritionists. Forget the dietitians.
No rapid weight loss.

Hi hammervice,

Amen to that! Don't view your weight loss as something that just requires a "diet." This means don't go for some popular diet fad (like Atkin's or some other odd diet fad that you won't be able to maintain for the rest of your life). My sister went on an apple diet once, where she literally only ate apples, bread, and water. She lost a ton of weight, but when she couldn't handle it a week into the diet, she regressed and gained all the weight back!

Don't go ON a diet; just change your diet, which means don't do anything too drastic. Slowly but surely replace regular meals you have with healthier, lower calorie meals with less sugar and carbs (and more fiber). For example, I used to drink a soda with every dinner. Now, I only drink water. It's sustainable because I can live with it forever. Whenever I'm feeling something sweet to drink, I just drink some really low-sugar juices I started to get into.

I rather like the IYAM sites- iyamhealthy dot com might be of help to you. IYAMBAD is pretty good as for a chuckle, and I hear that laughter burns calories!

All these replies seem pretty sensible but there are a few misconceptions about weight loss. First, your age; it's almost inevitable that you will gain extra weight as you age, and the older you get the more the fat will concentrate in your middle regions. YOU CANNOT TARGET FAT LOSS! If you are putting on a bit of a belly, doing sit-ups will improve muscle tone but won't burn much fat. Exercise, of any sort, will burn calories and ultimately reduce weight but it will do so from all of your body, not just the bits that look fattest. Exercise is vital to weight loss and you need to aim to burn more calories daily than daily intake. Proper hydration increases metabolic rate and so you burn more calories...drink lots of water daily, but slowly, sip not gulp.

A healthy food regime is the second key. Do not diet or starve yourself. Your body i.e. your brain, has a response mechanism to starvation. It raises the level at which you feel full...permanently...and therefore you eat more. In your regime, you need plenty of veg and low-fat protein. Rather than cutting out the foodstuffs that you know are fattening, try to reduce them gradually to avoid yet another body response, cravings, which can undo all your efforts in a matter of minutes.

Sorry if I expressed myself badly.

I do not speak English and use the Google translation.

I wanted to say that a Nutritionist seriously, does not prescribe diets, but recommend eating a balanced whole.

Up this point, the WHO is in full agreement.

I'll lend to you my twinkish dude for few days when he's in heat... you'll loose so much weight you'll disapear behind the tiniest tree :rofl::rofl:

Top dog had at some point gave very good advices on that... tag him or search his post. Perhaps it's because I have low blood sugar and can't get a single pound and if I do I'll loose it the same day, but all those advices are good... but Logan222 has pretty much hit the right solution... as it is always according to your life style. I can't stand still for one minute... when I write in GH it takes time because I'd go do something on another computer and come back to it... find what is best for you in all those advices and apply two or three of them gradually... although the "don't eat bread at all" statement, that's a little farfetched since bread ins't the only thing that can make people get a few pounds, yes it is made of fat and grease, but it all depend how your body react to the consumption and treatment of fat (fat is one of the thing the body has no limit he like to creates reserve even though you don't need it)... so never forget your own internal constitution.

In my opinion 5 pounds isn't much... but yeah what would I know I'm a skinny muscled up dude who doesn't get an once of fat even though I'd eat butter with a large spoon :rofl:, it would still block my arteries :cheers:

I used to have the exact same metabolism. I could eat whatever I wanted, and I wouldn't gain a pound. In fact, I think I even lost weight whenever I ate junk food. lol

But now, those days are over. Ever since about 1-2 years ago, my amazing metabolism wore off. :(
It sucks because now I can actually get fat if I don't take care of myself, but it's also good because now I have a real reason to eat healthier and be more active! Also, I like myself with a bit more meat on me. When I was skinny, I was too skinny.

Well in my case it's just not a metabolism I am hypoglycemic, which mean fat and sugar burns so fast they can't be used for reserves... in fact once a month I really have to stop and rest because I get in extreme low blood sugar and that is very dangerous for heart attacks or any other health problem as my immune system runs very low during those time. Also I am obligated to eat healthy, first because there's many things I have a hard time digesting... anything from a fast food restaurant will give me heart burns, I absolutely need a balance diet or I'll immediately run in low blood sugar and get so tired it's zombifying.I don't drink milk for I am lactose intolerant too. The good part of all that is that everyone in my household follow my diet, even Alex whom can get weight have been following it and he have kept his svelte silhouette ever since... but I am aware however that with age it can reverse... hypoglycemia being not completely the opposite, but a similar disease then diabetes, a person suffering from hypoglycemia can become diabetic. I don't really know how is that possible but according to my dad it can.

Many people believe hypoglycemia to be a non threatening disease, but that disease is a swiss army knife, it hides so many other health issues (such as IBS (irritable bowel syndrom) that it's hard sometimes to decipher as many other diseases will have the same symptoms such as: nervousness, sweating, hunger (but really intense - I eat 5 times a day otherwise I'll be one heck of an asshole :rofl:), trembling (for me normally occurs when I'm super hungry but doesn't really have taste for anything), weakness (that what I get at least 3 days straight every month), and palpitation (that one is scary because the symptom are similar to one having a heart attack), dizziness (oh does that happen often). So yes I have a condition that force me to eat well... and I can't do too much exercise as exercise burns fat and sugar and I'll go in low blood sugar very quick.;) Have you ever seen someone teaching martial art while eating a carrot, running while chewing an apple, well that's me LOL

Wow, that sucks, Jake! Being lactose intolerant would be like the worst thing ever for me. I am in love with cheese and milk, so not being able to tolerate them would so kill me.

Also, I have seen someone eating a banana while jogging. She ended up choking. So, be careful. lol

LOL well I have been lactose intolerant since I'm very young so I don't really misses milk and cheese since they have been ban from my diet since I'm 11 years old, although I would cheat sometimes but I do have to take some lactose pills before, if I forget to take them, I won't forget what comes after LOL, well in a way if I really really want to have anal sex and Alex is to be the penetrator (which doesn't happen too often LOL) one measured piece of cheese (too much will created massive pain and diarrhea) and voila, the best colon cleanser ever in my case:rofl:... I'm highly allergic to milk products and it doesn't take long for the effect to show up.

Can't eat bananas... too sweet and too much potassium it burn my stomach right away and does almost the same effect than having a tall glass of milk. But I never did choke since I can of develop an habit but I do understand the danger however.

I second the idea about not eating bread at all. It works for me.

A well-known M.D. said that from a nutritional standpoint, eating a slice of bread is the equivalent of eating a Snickers bar.
