When Ever I have a question yes i look around on the net but i always bring it back to you guys .I was looking for a tablet but just dont know wich one to get should i get a ipad (they do cost so00000000 much)

I like my touch and having a 10in screen would be nice to sit there and watch tv and be online and playing with the aps would be cool ,i have a laptop but I think i need (would like) some thing smaller but the 7in tablet look to small.

anyone have thoughts or have a 10in cheaper then a ipad tablet that they like.I really dont think i need a ipad just a nice tablet with some kool aps and internet thats about 10 in screen.

(i should get my thoughts together before i post then again if i did that i would never say anything.)

and what is the deal that you have to wait weeks for the ipad 2?

If you have an iPod Touch already and you like it and you are happy with it then I think and iPad will suit you very well. The same idea, but a bigger display with room for fuller interfaces and more RAM and CPU. It really is a faster, bigger, better iPod Touch!

When it comes to 7" tablets the Samsung Galaxy Tab seems to be king of the hill. I'm very much in two minds about the 7" form factor - it's no more pocketable than a 10" tablet, but you have a lot less screen, about half the area, and price-wise, you're not actually saving money. The PlayBook looks like it has potential, but I'd hold off a year till version 2 of that gets out. Version 1 is not quite out yet, but the reviewers have had their hands on it, and I think it's best summed up as "half baked" - I think it will be a great offering, but it's not quite ready yet.

I find it interesting you mention the iPad being expensive - it's actually kicking butt price-wise! The Competition are not able to under-cut Apple here, and are managing approximate parity at best. By using their vast cash reserves Apple have secured the best prices on the components needed for tablets, and have locked up most of the supply, so other manufacturers are having a really hard time getting parts, and having to pay a premium for them. It's really odd to see Apple leading on price, but we live in a funny world!

Speaking of price - I'd be inclined to avoid getting the 3G model and sticking with wifi - if you really need data on the go it;s probably cheaper to tether your iPad to your phone than to pay the extra up front for the 3G model, and then to have a separate monthly bill as well.

You mention you want cool apps - for now, the Apple App Store is king of the hill in that regard. Lots of apps, and all vetted by Apple to keep you safe from fraud and malware. I know some people hate the fact that Apple have a closed system, but as a user, I find it very much in my interest that the store is safe. For now at least, most cool apps start on the Apple platform, and then sometimes get ported to Android, you find very few apps that go the other way.

Finally - why do you have to wait for an iPad 2? Simple - Apple can't make them as fast as they can sell them! The wait times are not too bad though - just checked on the Irish Apple Store website and it's 2-3 weeks. Granted, not exactly instant gratification, but not horrific either.

What ever you choose to buy - I hope it works out well for you!

Jeez! How come have I missed this thread?

My suggestion is this (and am just expanding on what gb2000ie mentioned as he was pretty spot on)... do you need a tablet now, if the answer is no, I'd say wait, if you can. There are quite a few companies wanting to enter into the market, but was waiting on Apple to release their iPad 2 before they can jump onto the tablet bandwagon.

Motorola refused to do this with their flopped Xoom and got bitten in the ass pretty badly.. and considering how they marketed their product, I feel no mercy on them. I think when further devices are released the market prices would be at reasonable figures.

This was the case for the eReader market, as eReaders dropped considerably in prices as the first iPad was announced last year.

Toshiba seems like a good alternative as they are supposedly building a new tablet based on Android OS with features we have long been begging for. And from the previews shown at CES in January this year.. it dos seem promising.

That said, I am not particularly a fan of Android OS, and although their honeycomb OS does seem like a step closer to a more flexible operating systerm the content available in their market is not of par quality (and I say this as a past Android device owner) So my advice, if you intend to wait to try and play a bit with various devices adn see which you feel comfortably with.

The iPad is great, I got an iPad.. never bothered updating to iPad 2 as I never considered the update that important to upgrade. And honestly, I love it!

I wont say go get an iPad, and especially now because within the next two months their may be releases which could either make you disappointed (or maybe not)

You get what you pay for. All the sub-499 tabs are junk. Old version of Android which even Google say are not suited to tablets, and shitty battery life. Going from an iPod Touch to one of these tablets will be a massive disappointment. If you really want to go that route, my only advice would be to find someone who owns one and is happy with it and then borrow it for an hour.

I hate buying tech based on specs and pictures - you have to hold and use tech before you know whether it's for you or not. I know you can go play with an iPad in an Apple store - perhaps you can go play with some of the cheap tabs in a local computer store or something?

Best of luck!

Congrats on your new purchase! That's the exact iPad I have, and it's served me very well for a year now, and is still going strong.

I really should have thought to mention the refurb store in my previous post. You often get some great deals in there. I picked up a 27" iMac in there for €1,300 a few months ago.

Enjoy your new toy :)

I don't see much need for massive storage. I use Air Video to stream media from my computer to the iPad. It's a really cool program that converts the video to H.264 as it streams so that when it gets to the iPad it can use the built-in hardware H.264 decoder and save you a ton of battery life. The little server app for Air Video on your computer is available for both Windows and Mac - definitely worth checking out if you have a a lot of media on your computer: http://anonym.to/?http://www.inmethod.com/air-video/index.html

The new ipad is thinner than the first ipad, and the in most cases the cases for the second gen may take advantage of the magnetic side.

I'd say go for the cases of the first gen ipad. I've got the default case from Apple, which I love, and it is cheaper than the third party cases (well when i had last checked) I prefer the Apple case mainly because I can have the ipad lifted at an angle when looking at videos. I know there are other cases which do it, but they were more expensive.

PS. Congrats on your new purchase, I'm sure you'd love your new toy.

If you need advice on cool apps, dont be shy to ask.

One app I'd recommend is iSwifter.. It's a web browser which displays flash content (I'm assuming its simulated as flash is not native to the iPad)

As for cases - the cool new iPad 2 cases uses a system of some 35 magnets to do it's thing, with at least half of those magnets built into the body of the iPad, so it simply won't work on an iPad 1 which doesn't have those magnets in it.

Like Gypsy I too use the Apple case for my iPad 1 - I find it really handy because of all the different positions it works in. When you fold the flap back into the special catch for it it forms a triangle which you can use flat on a desk to give a nice angle for typing, or to stand the iPad up in either portrait or landscape mode - I use it as a stand a lot, and it does a great job of keeping the tablet safe when it's in your bag with things bumping into it.

Finally - as for why you'd want to upgrade to the iPad 2, it really all comes down to just these things:
1) thinner (shockingly thin in fact)
2) faster (dual core CPU, this makes some advanced apps iPad 2 only)
3) has cameras
4) has the cool magnets for the fancy cover

That really is all there is to it - it's not a revolution but an evolution.

I would say, Samsung Galaxy Tab.. way cheaper and way better than Ipad..

Could you elaborate on that? What about the Galaxy makes it better than the iPad?

As for cheaper - you have an interesting definition of that word.

7" Galaxy Tab with 16GB storage: €645.84
10" iPad 2 with 16GB storage: €479.00

Maths was not my best subject at university, but I'm pretty sure that 479 is less that 645! And for that lower price, you get a bigger screen too.

You can of course get the Galaxy for less money up-front if you commit to a long contract with a cell provider - but that's not cheaper - that's just paid over a longer term. You have to compare like with like to get meaningful data.

Tech is not a religion - facts matter!

Ok I'm sure many of u want a bit of a report on my new iPad so let's go...

The iPad 2
The design is of course gorgeous (apologies in advance for the over use of gorgeous but I can't help it lol)
It's of course apple design and while many might criticise, u can't argue with the design, it is gorgeous!
The feel is REALLY solid and even if u try it in the shops until u hold one lounging around in ur sitting room or bed u don't appreciate it till then

The screen is really bright and crisp, while the retina display might have been nice with the new pad I'm actually still happy with it so no worries there
Surfing the net in it is truly awesome even gorgeous!! I'm typing on it replying here and surfing gh on it is just great!!
The touch response, well let me say I've used the galaxy tab, galaxy phones, many other phones and tablets and nothing NOTHING compares to the response or light flick or touch apple can do, their touch screens are truly king! And nothing I've tried comes close!

There is of course bad things
No native flash :( can't stream the nice streams here which is a pity in bed with a hard on lol
Haven't tried the work around yet I admit, but have tried the iPad movies from certain sites and they are truly cum worthy lol dare I say gorgeous lol
There is a stockpile of apps, and while that is a good sign I'm slightly disappointed more of the apps I bought for my iPhone don't have iPad versions with em, meaning I gota buy em again?? And a higher price......

There are of course many many free apps but on the iPhone buying an odd app or game was nothing since most were 79c so really think nothing of it
But on the iPad? The apps and games are sometimes triple or more so u do think twice:(
But this is the app developers fault so we can over look this with the free stuff...

One bad thing about iPad 2 that is apples fault and I'm disappointed in are the cameras
The front one for FaceTime, ok doesn't have to be great and it's not so I can over look it, but the back one could have been better
The new camera in the iPhone 4 is great and adding that to the iPad would have been awesome but alas...
It's a 720p hd camera so don't plan on taking mind blowing pics like in the iPhone 4
Granted I haven't tried takin pics outside so maybe they could be better..

Oh and unless u have a high power USB port in ur computer u will have to charge it through a socket
Thankfully u get a charger with it but its a pity I can't charge it while transferring and syncing on my netbook...

Btw like the iPhone u gota sync through iTunes, aka no quick file sharing through bluetooth or something. For now all through USB through iTunes..

Back to the good stuff..
FaceTime I'm happy to report is a LOT of fun, tried it with a mate on his iPhone 4 in the uk and no lag, no jumping, just fluid video call and truly awesome
And before u all ask we were clothed the whole time lol

Surfing the net on this as I said above is truly new and unique and I really love it

I downloaded some iBooks for free from a site (don't look at me like that, u download porn for free here lol)
Anyways putting em into ibooks was easy and books on this really does look gorgeous!
U can easily read a book no probs on this and looks great. I even put on a PDF book and it works great, no probs

Gaming is truly something new.. I'm a ps3 games at hear, first person shooter but playing the nifty puzzles and alikes through touch is something new and enjoyable

Battery is REALLY like 10 hours!
I've been playing games, surfing net, downloading, streaming, doing everything, FaceTime and all and it's still going. Amazing!

Going through photo albums and pics is just great. Flick from one to another and pinch to zoom in and out. Any porn pic lover would love this lol lol

I have movies in it too, get em with my blu rays and watching movies in this aka transformers or iron man is gorgeous
No hd of course but out in the road or train, or even in bed watching movies or tv on it is great!

There's home sharing now on it too, so if ur iTunes is up and running u can stream from it to ur pad so u dint need to keep syncing ur movies or tv shows to it ;)

COVER
I got the new smart cover with mine
And it truly is nifty
The magnets are strong and just clasp into the pad nicely
Closing it puts the pad to sleep and opening it wakes it, really nice
U can fold it behind it giving nice grip to the brushed aluminium on the back
It truly doesn't spoil the look or feel of the iPad
Granted the iPad 1 had a great case it does hide the iPad design while this doesn't
Bad thing? Of course...
The back isn't protected at all to scratches, I've bought and am waiting for a plastic all over covering which sticks to the pad preventing scratches and doesn't stop the new cover from working

Overall??
I really love this new pet of mine! U may not think u have a reason for it but lying here in bed surfing the news, checking out gh and replying to u all it really has made a home in my geeky life lol
Ive only had it a day and not outside yet but IMO it can only get better and the future iPads def have a future...
