Anybody get stuck in the "Chunnel?"

A friend of mine did. Said it was absolutely hell! They got about 2 bottles water in the 16 hours he was stuck down there. The heat while they were stuck underground (in pitch darkness) was so bad people were fainting and throwing up. They were told not to move and breathe shallowly to preserve oxygen! I mean I'd go mental if I was told that!

He ended up on a freight train, no blankets, no food, no water, going through on some other track. Poor guy =/

I would never travel anywhere anyway over Christmas (or most public holidays for that matter) but this was always one reason I've never fancied the tunnel.

In fact half the south of England yesterday was at a standstill, some car drivers have slept in their cars. Eurostar are resuming today with a reduced service so anyone due to travel today won't go till tomorrow. Apart from being stuck in a train others have been stuck at the station at each end not knowing what to do or where to go. With airports being closed too there wouldn't have been any choice but wait anyway if you're trying to get home.

Whole thing sounds a real nightmare, feel very sorry for them all. Wonder how many will be put off using it again!

Screw it, just from my friend's account, I'll be damned if I'd get on one!

And all he got for his ordeal is a refunded ticket and a complimentary return. Like hell he'd wanna use it!

That really must have sucked but from the pictures they showed on the news here that system sure looks cool...especially compared to our trains here in the US...its amazing that you can get from Paris to London in 3 hours...going from Newark (NJ) to Schenectady (NY) in 3 hours just doesnt have that same warm and fuzzy ring.

Is it expensive?

My ex's parents did it a couple of times for £80 per person return. Not sure if there were cheaper seats available etc though, as they tend to travel in style normally.

But off-set that against a flight cost and I guess it's kinda reasonable.

Yea, borderline reasonable for the length of the trip in miles/kms. But like you say, maybe they went first class. I would love it. And it probably beats having to go to the airport and dealing with that mess...not sure about there, but airports around here are herendously irritating.

Yeah at least with the train, you pretty much just stroll in and get on. Not really that much more to it! As far as I remember, there's not even a proper passport control either. There wasn't when I went on the car version of it in any case. Just random passport checks here and there.

You wouldn't be much good in London, the Tube is the best way to get around :p

Have to admit I was never keen years ago but doesn't worry me very much these days. Been in a far smaller (non-public) tunnel which was slightly claustrophic, or should have been, but didn't affect me. Then again, I wasn't stuck several miles into it with the North Sea on top!

Well one of these days it just may happen taking the "Path" train to NYC from New Jersey...Under the Hudson you can see water seeping in...not to mention the train feels like it is coming off the tracks at any moment...but given that...I think I'd be calm and probably assume a reassuring role.
