Studies have shown that neanderthals required as much as four times the protein to grow and develop as modern humans do today. And we still have not yet evolved beyond the need for meat (sorry to X-man and the rest of the granola brigade, but it's a fact) Meat-eating was and is essential for human evolution, it was a meat diet, full of densely-packed nutrients, that provided the catalyst for human evolution, particularly the growth of the brain. If proto-humans hadn't eaten meat, we'd still be swinging in the jungle with the rest of the monkeys...

I'm not staunch about it, I occasionally lapse, albeit briefly ;)

I did have to try a currywurst and a bratwurst in Berlin 3 weeks ago :p They are very rare moments though, after more than 20 years I can't say I could ever go back to eating meat on any sort of regular basis. Apart from my personal reasons for avoiding it I can't say I really like it, or the thoughts of it, that much anymore.

Some experts have often pointed out that the length of our intestine is the same as non-meat eating animals, where the carnivores in the animal world have shorter ones. This has been a theory why we get certain types of cancer as our innards aren't compatible for eating meat.

Humans are not "vores" at all--we can survive on any diet, containing no animal products or a lot--oppurtunivores if you like, there is no " natural" diet, and the typical meat-heavy western diet is not a biological, but an arbitrary cultural practice (and a very unhealthy one.) As X-man pointed out, there are plenty of arguments that our body is not designed for meat eating, and there is also plenty of scientific doubt that meat had anything to do with our evolution, so it's your personal belief system.

I've been a vegetarian my whole life, and in the past decade a vegan, so I'm not a meat-eating creature. I'm not concerned at all what my ancestors ate, and I certainly don't follow their other oft. ignorant customs.
