Nooooo don't leave without saying anything! If you're leaving a group always make it known I think. I have a friend who leaves without a word and my other friends bitch about him ... I think he should say he's leaving at least to let us know and not worry.

I'm fine with Au Revoirs - I alwaysss hug my friends (well female ones at least cause my straight guy buddies don't hug) when I say goodbye.

In regards to Adieus, I'm horrible at it, I cry. I get so emotionally attached to people, and when it's time to leave it's super hard. Primary school, high school, relatives from overseas, people who have passed away, TV shows that end - I cry and I hate it !!! To me, it's one of the hardest things in life.

For some reason over the past several years, I am not good with goodbyes. They tend to tug at my heartstrings really hard and gets the best of me.

I have no probs with saying goodbye, if I am the one who must depart. If a loved one or very close friend must say goodbye, I won't break into tears or become depressed, but I do get a bit melancholy after they've gone.

usually i'm good with goodbyes because i've seen and done it a lot in my life. but lately as i grow older and find deeper meaning in friendship, relationship, etc saying or giving goodyes become more and more difficult.

at the moment i am wrapping up my degree and in a very short time i will leave the place where i'm living for good. i've been seeing this guy for 3-4 months now and i have very deep affection toward him. i don't know if i can say goodbye to him

where's the good in goodbye?

Maybe it expresses that you had good times together, that come to an end now. So bye, bye friend, you have enriched my life. Nice words for a sad moment.

Well, consider this. Goodbye is a contraction of an old English spiritual blessing - "God Be With Ye". So if you are spiritual and use reference to a deity, than why not use the whole phrase? If you are not (and that's equally fine), then use a phrase that signifies your good wishes for that person.....perhaps something like "as we part, may peace and love always be yours"; or something of that sort. Expressing your sadness at the need to part and wishing him well going forward in his life is the utmost kind thing to say, whatever the actual phraseology.

thanks a lot hawtsean. i never thought about it that way. at the moment we're just having as much good times as possible. i think when the time comes i'll break down in tears (and i rarely/almost never shed tears) but i think what you wrote was true. it is the kindest thing to say :)
