Askreddit: If there is a "cure" for being gay, would you take it?

I've been redditing for quite a while now, and I've come across this interesting topic: Anon URL. I don't know how many of you go on reddit (I don't need to know either ;)), but I would like to ask that question here too: Would you or would you not? And why/why not?

I'll start with myself: Quite frankly I would. Why? Because life would be so much simpler! You could fit into the "social norm" better (not saying it's right though), don't have to watch your backs so much, one less problem in your life out of many, and it'll probably be easier to hook up with a life partner I guess (not that hooking up with girls is gonna be any easier anyway, just it's easier to tell a girl from a guy than a gay/bi guy from a straight guy)

EDIT: Sorry, I guess I didn't expect everyone to take the question so literally, what I meant was hypothetically, SOMEHOW, you could change your sexuality, and that includes a total switch of affection and passion for the chosen gender, the full nine yards, without any side effects at all. Would you still do it? Why/why not?

On this subject, the science (the real one) has already expressed in a clear and sharp.
Only the "science" driven and sponsored by the right and by some religions, continues to support this nonsense.

However, you are free to try. Then let us know how it went

No I would not take it. Maybe if it comes in the form of buttercookies I might be tempted though or hidden in a cake, I guess you could poison me quite easily with a nice piece of apple pie but not that one with the stripes and raisins, but the other one, hhmmm, where was I? Ah yes, I agree, let us know how it went.

Please be careful, seeker, this is a very dangerous area, nobody wants you to get hurt.
The reddit quote from Team America was good, some will say that movie contains homophobia but I like that bad taste sense of humour.
Now back to the serious stuff. How would a gay cure work? With enough psychological pressure you could make someone snuff out their homosexual feelings. Then what. You would never be able to make hetrosexual feelings grow in their place. The result would be a man who wasnt gay but wasnt really straight either, a man with a vaccumn in his soul.
Such a man could marry a girl and bring up kids but it would be cold, functional marriage without passion. Think of the girl, would it be fair to her?
Does the saying 'the grass is always greener on the other side' translate into your language? There are lots of challenges for a gay man to overcome before he finds a happy life, as a straight man you would face different challenges but just as many of them.

There is no cure, my boy.

You've been asking this question in a number of posts, in a number of ways.
You are you. I'm assuming you are gay.
There's no pill; there's no therapy.

There is a solution. Be yourself.
Fuck the world. Be yourself.

I'm not saying it's easy. But it's the journey many of us have made.
You can do this.

Sorry guys, but that's not really what I meant. I know the question isn't well-worded (the OP himself said so), that this is a minefield of a subject (I'm agnostic btw), and I know there isn't a "cure" to homosexuality, any more than a "cure" to change your personality or make your dick bigger :p. What I (and the OP) meant was more of a hypothetical situation where SOMEHOW, you could change your sexuality, and that includes a total switch of affection and passion for the chosen gender, the full nine yards, without any side effects at all. Would you still do it? Why/why not?

I know some, if not most, of you guys here are at an age/stage that perhaps have seen the light, and for that you have my utmost respect and admiration. It's just that at this point in time I don't, and that light at the end of the tunnel to me is just an oncoming train. Will that change in the future? Maybe, maybe not, I don't know yet.

Btw dargelos, there is a saying in my language like that of 'the grass is always greener on the other side', but uh, I actually prefer the English one, tyvm!

If you continue to dream about some "cure" the train will never transform into a light. ;)

Try to do something, there are hotlines, join a coming-out-group or something. This should be possible as long as you're not from Russia.

I'm not supposed to fit into hetero-normative social norm. I don't regret that and I'm not ashamed of that.

Advantages of being gay:
- you can't cause unwanted pregnancy to your partner, so there is no danger of paying alimony
- you don't have to complicately explore your prtners body because it's prrety same as yours (almost)
- you and your partner have same output level in sports
- you can lend each others clothes and it doesn't look weird
- in some Muslim coutries straight couple can rent twin or double room only when they're married - gays doesn't have this problem (what a "gay advantage" in places where you wouldnt await that ... )
and many many anothers!
:D
Disadvantages:
I don't fucking care of them!
:D :D :D

I did not mean to be argumentative with you, and if I gave that impression I apologize.

I understand what you mean and I am also convinced that many others think or have there been times when they thought of this. People who have had to endure all sorts of oppression, humiliation and violence. But it is hard to imagine this hypothetical situation, because it is pure utopia.

The light is there for everyone. It's up to us to decide of press the switch, or leave the light off.

If it comes in the form of a really nice treat, does not come with a slough of side-effects and if the intended effect wears off once you stop taking it, I might be tempted to try just to find out what the fuck is so great with being straight.

I've had liquor cure. It just means that you can't get it up for boys or girls, but then you become past caring anyway.
Has anybody heard of BBC presenter Peter White? He has been blind since birth, he was asked if he ever dreamed of a cure. His answer was very moving, he said that he had enjoyed his life, he was proud of what he had achieved in his successful career and if there was a pill to restore his eyes he wouldnt take it because he would be a differant man if he could see and he would rather not change anything in his life. At the same time he stressed that for other blind people such a cure would be a dream come true and he prays that their dream does come true. His dream was to stay just the the way he is.
Dont go thinking I equate blindness with gayness, there is no comparison, one is a disability, the other isnt. One wont get better without a medical miracle. The other gets better all by itself. I better stop this bit, I'm digging a hole I'm about to fall in.
In your revised version you posited a cure which was perfect with no side effects.
There is one side effect which is impossible to avoid. If a drug was to remove from me an important part of my personality it would remove from me something that has caused me enormous stress, yeah, and also allowed me to experience absolutely fucking ginormous, n to the power x, happiness. I think I would miss that. Quite a lot

A cure is meant only for a disease, and being gay/bi isn't a disease.........so there is no question of a 'cure', hypothetical or otherwise!!! :)

And No....I wouldn't want to change my sexuality because of societal fear or pressure!!
Why should I?
Nature has intended for me to be this way, so who am I to question nature??
Anyway, I don't care much for society and those man-made so-called moral codes!
I can decide what is right or wrong for myself and choose to act appropriately!!
