So I recently disvered that among barebackers there are mans trying to catch HIV / "Giftting" HIV? Seriously WHAT THE FUCK! , why would anyone want to be HIV+?
Vanity and attention. They like the idea of halting whatever conversation there is and instantly getting all eyes on them by saying they have HIV. They obviously have no clue just exactly how painful the condition can be.
I always just assumed it was a media 'scare story' to whip up a frenzy amongst straights... Never met anyone who actually held this view themselves...
I HOPE it ain't true anyway... Utter lunacy... Although I can imagine someone who had caught H.I.V by the usual means wanting to claim they 'Wanted to get it' in order to try and wrest some control back over the situation...
I don't know... If it's genuine I would like to read what a truly world class psychologist made of it.
I see this mainly as a scare story. Every now and then it pops up on a forum and you get the usual reactions. Weird and abnormal things draws people's attention, not normal things.
I do not say it does never happen but given the fact that we seldom do read first hand stories about it and few people know someone that is a bug chaser/giver makes me think that it is not something that happens on a big scale.
Maybe these stories come into the world by the movies of Treasure Island Media et. al. that make a sick fetish out of 'the conversion' from being HIV- into being HIV+. For TIM this is mainly a PR strategy to raise interest for their products (controversy --->attention) because we can safely assume that guys who are in a TIM film are already HIV+. But I can imagine that a mentally unstable gay guy who is highly under the influence of the retardation of TIM (and drugs and alcohol) becomes a bug chaser/giver.
Understandably, it sounds crazy if you have never encountered it - but bug chasing is no fairy tale. Here is the first part of a doentary that aired on CNN on the subject:
Barebacking and bug chasing are not the same thing. Don't paint them with the same brush. Most people who have unprotected sex do not want to get HIV.
Gift giving / bug chasing, on the other hand, is a very specific sub-culture that romanticizes the transmission of HIV.
The obvious question is, why? The reasons vary, but include:
A surrender to the perceived inevitability of HIV.
A "battle fatigue" type weariness from the constant effort to prevent the disease. Once they have it, they can stop worrying about getting it.
Embracing the freedom of bareback sex by embracing all possible consequences.
Longing to follow in the footsteps of a mentor, lover, or other role model.
Rebellion against authority and always having to be good and do the right, politically correct thing.
HIV becomes a fetish - the dark unseen power of the virus becomes erotically charged.
HIV becomes intertwined with other fetishes, such as S/M.
HIV+ becomes a powerful identity and the virus is the ultimate tattoo.
It's complicated and unfortunate - but then so is escaping into drugs and alcohol. The difference, of course, is that no amount of rehab can ever make a person HIV negative again.
Thanks Topdog, excellent answer... I might go investigate further as it seems far removed from a general 'suicidal impulse'... Maybe also has something to with a 'punishment' mindset... Will have a look in the journals I reckon, see what the current thinking is...
Wikipedia is actually a good starting point. Also do a video search and you will find more of the CNN doentary, and also a segment done by the BBC.
On the other end of the spectrum, Tim Dean's book Unlimited Intimacy: Reflections on the subculture of Barebacking delves into sociology and sexual psychology. Its interesting, but not for the casual reader.
