Challenge: give up the www for 1 month

How about this for a challenge: no internet for the month of July. I am thinking of doing it, and maybe giving up TV as well. So just radio and newspapers!

Is it possible?

Are YOU up to the challenge?

Some motivational music:

:p

No chance at all! I occasionally use it at work , and my main hobby depends on being able to both research and upload files (not porn or anything like that :p ) not to mention losing contact with several people I talk to very regularly.

TV is easy, I hardly watch it, prefer BBC Radio 4 or LBC in London to anything TV can offer.

Anyway, why torture yourself for the hell of it? If you want to give up modern communication tools then take a holiday away from it all. I never miss it when I'm away, but it's pretty much essential at home.

It's the only social life I have.
All my friends are in the web.

No thanks.

TV, I could go without.
But not the computer. It's a necessity, I must have it for work.

the main reason to suggest or create such a challenge is if you think the internet and tv are totally dominating your life--as fo mr--i say no--i work 12 to 14 hours a day sleep some and the internet and tv is the little bit of time i get to relax before going to sleep or getting up for work the next day--so like i said do it if you feel it is dominating your life--if it is then do something about it either cut back on it some or do without like you said for a month but what about your friends online emails and stuff--facebook and twitter if you use them--how will you keep up with them hehehe--let me know how it goes

I am surprised that no one is really interested in the idea?

Are you really? I'm not in the least, you'd have more success asking a kid to not eat sweets (candy) :p

I couldn't do it even if I wanted to. I have like a bazillion jobs and bits that I do online. 1 of my jobs actually involves passively playing games on the net ;). I have a crap attention span, so I have to constantly flick between things to keep myself going otherwise I'd never get stuff done.

Hmm giving up the web? Why? I can't imagine the life without it anymore. As I can't imagine life without electricity, phone, car, fridges... and million of other little addictions of modern time.

haha..Yes Tom you have done your penance. What did you give up ? Re giving up the schminternet are you out of your fucking mind..(lol) No hotty boy cock pics for a month !! I couldn't last an hour. In all honesty I do use it for other work things as well so it would be very difficult. I often wonder how we would all cope if it got deleted..The web that is. Then again isn't it just a Big Brother tool to keep tracks on us all..or is that me being just a tad paranoid... (clicks on filth)

Squallmuzza...

You are something of an artist I think... is this dependency on the internet (not just you --lot's of us are in this boat) in any way remarkable? Could you express the dependency in an artistic fashion? When you think about the internet (as necessity) what emotions does it evoke in you?

xxoo

It's clearly a worrying thing really. As my parents always say 'when I was your age, we used to entertain ourselves with a cardboard box and nothing more'. I do feel somewhat at a loss without internet as both a tool (I used it 3 times today to research facts when I was out with friends using my phone) and a boredom buster all the time.

It really is just another form of addiction. It seems as if it has no real adverse effects, but I know a few people that have severe social phobias due to it. They..... I guess network with people online, but can't make friends in the real world. To the point that making friends is an alien and scary concept to them.

However my actual true feelings on it being viewed as a NECESSITY (not food, water and shelter, but close) are slightly mixed. After all, it is a great benefit as a tool in any sense, but is it worth the sacrifice of sociability and the drain on productivity? I can't say.

I would really hate to be without it, not just for the career option (because that's a large chunk of my internet time), but for simple things like this. Just being able to discuss something in an open forum, where points of views are more varied than anywhere else, where even the reason we're here is varied is priceless.

I learn daily, experience new things constantly, purely from internet access being constantly there and constantly being taken advantage of. Without it, my life would definitely lack a lot of the savour it currently does.

I guess you really need to have been on both sides of the mirror to know for sure (and I mean that in an impossible way, i.e. having grown up in both sets of circumstances). You really can't experience the positives and negatives properly without that.

So instead of an artistic answer, you've had a ramble.... But I think that's about as good as it's going to get on a subject like this really.

I have been on both sides of the fence and glad too. I experienced my younger years without having to rely on it, by making a different entertainment, and anything like this was pure science fiction.

I think to be young and spend it stuck in a bedroom and only talking or communicating over a screen must be terrible. I went out, I had fun in the open air, TV was a treat as it wasn't on all day or night and there were only 3 channels.

Having said that, I first used the net quite early on, before it was the norm, and still something mysterious, it was slow and finding anything was quite exciting :p Nothing commercial and very few early porn sites! :p I'd miss it now as it opened up a huge world and there are certain things I couldn't do without it.

But I'm glad I experienced life without it, it was simpler, but I prefer life with it now. I'm certainly not anti-social and have met many people and know many people because of it, but that doesn't mean I couldn't walk away from it all, I just don't see the point. If I had a complete change of life style then maybe, but there is nothing wrong in using technology as long as you don't let it rule everything about you ;)

Yeah.

Wouldn't have met a BUNCH of people (in fact most of my current friend group) if it wasn't for the net. While it wasn't the direct cause of meeting them, it's still a chain of causality that would otherwise never happened.

And let's not forget my dear Liam/hullabaloo on here ;)
