Well in theory either type - the fan-operated or the gel-pad system - should take heat from your laptop.. but before you get one check why your laptop is getting hot... have you checked the fan outlet is clear, and don't forget the air inlets.. usually to be found on the laptops base.. if you use the laptop on a carpet or on the bed they could be partially blocked with dust or lint, and less air flow equals less cooling. Wherever you use it try raising the back of the laptop so air can circulate under it and get to the inlets better.

If you do decide to buy a cooler check them out carefully before you buy.. I looked into them on the 'net about a year ago.. some reviews said that because they are made for any and all makes of laptop some laptops slide off some of them.

I found that a piece of 1/2 inch plywood cut a little larger than the laptop itself is just a good as a cooler. Most people use their laptops on their laps or in bed. This causes the fan intake and exhaust to sometimes get blocked by the clothes or bedding. Keeping the computer on the plywood keeps the airflow unblocked and usually prevents overheating. Also as slimjim else said check that there is no buildup of lint to block the flow. Gluing a small block on the plywood near the top, then put Velcro on it and the back of the laptop to prevent sliding off.

for heavy use laptop? yes . for my portege M900 i'm using 3 fan as cooling pad, somehow its maintain processor activity and harddrive stability, no use for nonstop dvd drive, extreme heat my appear after three hours nonstop usage of DVD drive. heat condition may cause damage your laptop motherboard especially VGA card, after 4 years as IT staff, cooling pad as non separate accessories for my office laptop it cost 4-10 US dollar per cooling pad, reduce maintenance service on life battery or VGA damage (last month VGA damage on overheat SOny Vaio cost 4.5 million rupiah or around 400 US dollar)

due heat problem on most laptop our health department strongly recommended not to put laptop on your lap, fertility issues.

Get yourself a Mac :p .

It produces no sound, it has no visible air in/outlets :D It does not heat up at all.

Cooling pads work a treat. Used them myself in the past, just because I had a crappy laptop with not enough fan power to deal with long usage times.

Cost me about £5, had some cool blue lights in it and was more than enough to keep it from frying.

i'd say go for it, just be aware of the reviews b/c some of the pads out there are complete crap. Upon getting my computer i shelled out 65$$ for a decent cooling pad and i LOVE it. Since i am a heavy computer user and don't wanna ruin my vaio the pad was a must for me. Even if ur not a heavy user its still good to get like a 20$$ for occasional usage..just to be on the save side. THanks to my pad my laptop is on for weeks and is relatively cool. That said pads don't actually totatlly COOL the computer but rather make it less hot.

Well mine was like ice with my crappy £5 one. I don't think price is a massive issue. The price just reflects how sturdy it's going to be and the aesthetics of the thing. It's essentially going to be X amount of fans in a bit of perspex no matter what way you slant it :p

Just wondering: can the combination of cooling pad + hot laptop possibly cause a danger of condensation in the laptop? Never thought about that...

I don't think so. It's not really a moist, humid heat. It's a dry processor heat. And considering how hot the equipment gets in there, I'd imagine any liquid would be burned off almost instantly.

I guess you're right. The danger of condense would appear if the laptop was actually very cold. Like in winter, when you bring it to a warm room.

My point was not that price is "massive issue". However quality is. price often subjective because well they change from retailer to retailer. That said a 20Usd cooler won't do you much good if Ur running a heavy duty computer all day every day, and don't forget the fact that those sub-par coolers are made with plastic...and flimsy fans. So yea basically a bunch sh!t comes into the task is figuring out which is best
