Covers and reinventions

Sometimes I find cover songs that I like better than the original. Other times, I just enjoy listening to a great song being reinterpreted.

Here's an example

There a quite a few covers and reinvention mixes of songs that I really like however, the one that I want to own is for the phone commercial that features a new remix of the Temptations song "Power". This version is much more danceable than the original Temptation version which is very funky.

As a guitarist, viewing amateur covers is inspiring and helps you become a better musician. Thats why YouTube has become the greatest invention to musicians worldwide. You can see absolutely perfect copies of any and all tunes from pop, to rock, to metal to fusion.

It is fascinating to hear/watch some dude in his bedroom from some 3rd world country, doing a perfect copy of "Sweet Child O' Mine". Getting the exact same sound, intonation, speed, and fingering as Slash. The closer he gets to a perfect imitation, the longer the list of positive comments.

I have much more respect for an artist who covers a song in a completely different way from the original - i.e. "reinvents" it - than someone whose version is so similar to the original that you have to listen hard to tell which is which. I regard the latter kind of cover as pointless - though I suppose you could say that money is the point.

The best cover EVER - 10 times better than the original - is surely Jimi Hendrix's version of Bob Dylan's All Along the Watchtower.
