American & British people have casually and thoughtlessly, slaughtered and simplified the Queens English to such a degree that their version of English is, in my opinion, no longer English.
Here are some examples of incorrect English:
1] Two thousand three (2003).
2] Could care less.
3] Adding the following suffixes to virtually any word: acity, icity, ocity, ism, ology. Example - ampacity.
4] Favor, color, neighbor etc.
5] Donut.
6] Ass (bum).
7] September seven.
8] U.S. English.
9] Spell checker.
10] Math.
11] What's up.
12] Converting Irregular verbs to Regular verbs (utter laziness). Examples - pleaded, earned, learned, dreamed, spelled, smelled, burned etc.
13] Pissed.
14] Adding 's' to uncountable mass nouns. Examples - staffs, softwares, homewares, hardwares etc.
15] Incorrect usage of 'surgeries'. Example - He had three surgeries on his heart.
16] Plurals of nouns with 'f' as the last letter. Examples - roofs, halfs etc.
17] Check (money).
18] Commas used with 'and' and 'but'. Example - I offered him money, but he refused. I offered him money, and he refused.
19] License.
20] Omission of the word 'to'. Example - He wrote me.
21] My bad.
22] Off of.
23] Switch out, swap out.
24] Lost to care.
25] Pressurised. In the beginning, I was heavily pressurised into taking an HIV test.
The above items correctly written and therefore correctly pronounced:
1] Two thousand and three.
2] Couldn't care less.
3] Current carrying capacity (the correct version of ampacity).
4] Favour, colour, neighbour etc.
5] Doughnuts.
6] Arse. An ass is a kind of small horse.
7] The seventh of September.
8] There is no such thing as U.S. English. As a matter of fact, Microsoft shall rename dictionaries (spelling checkers) as follows;
a) 'American English' shall be renamed to 'American'.
b) 'British English' shall be renamed to 'English'.
c) 'Australian English' shall be renamed to 'English'.
9] Spelling checker.
10] Maths.
11] Hello.
12] Pled, earnt, learnt, dreamt, spelt, smelt, burnt.
13] Pissed off. 'Pissed' means drunk. 'Pissed off' means angry or leave (go). (It has more meanings)
14] There are 60 staff in my company. He has a lot of hardware and software. This shop has many different types of homeware.
15] He had three surgical procedures on his heart. He had three lots of surgery on his heart. He visited three surgeries.
16] Rooves, halves.
17] Cheque.
18] The conjunctions 'and' and 'but' imply a pause. I offered him money but he refused. I offered him money and he refused.
19] License - verb. Licence - noun.
20] He wrote to me.
21] My mistake.
22] Use 'from' or just use 'off'. No need for the 'of'.
23] Use 'switch' or 'swap'. No need for the 'out'.
24] Lost from care.
25] Pressured. In the beginning, I was heavily pressured into taking an HIV test.
Also, many people now insist upon the illogical simplification of the negative form of anything. The word "without" seems to have disappeared. See below.
Examples of incorrect usage:
1] She has no money.
2] The car was delivered with no air conditioning.
3] I made no money today.
4] She came with no presents for the children.
5] There are no rules when at war.
Corrected versions of the above:
1] She doesn't have any money. She hasn't got any money. She hasn't any money.
2] The car was delivered without air conditioning.
3] I didn't make (any) money today.
4] I came without presents for the children.
5] There aren't (any) rules when at war.
Of course, there are those who simply write how they speak and as a result, write things like, "I should of done that" and "I will help you rather then help her".
It appears as though everybody is becoming so lazy that they will resort to illogical usage to avoid using one or two extra words.
This reminds me of the movie 'Idiocracy'.
All Microsoft operating systems (& other software) need to set the default language to English & not American. This will prevent the "Americanisation" of the international language.
Those who insist that incorrect and illogical usage is necessary for a "living language", are not very good thinkers. If this attitude was adopted in the engineering world, many things would begin to fail.
The scientific world is a victim of this "let's go with the flow" mentality, creating diseases that don't exist and prescribing drugs that cause the disease they are said to treat.
