A phobia is, according to wikipedia, a "type of anxiety disorder, usually defined as a persistent fear of an object or situation in which the sufferer commits to great lengths in avoiding, typically disproportional to the actual danger posed, often being recognized as irrational"

I have a crippling fear to injections. I shiver whenever one of those things
is near me. I know that there's no reason to be scared but, well, phobias are
sometimes irrational. Do any of you guys have a phobia?

Maybe not so much of a phobia but a recurring fear in your life. I've met
in my college practices people with truly unique phobias. The one I think
is the weirdest one yet was a lady that was afraid of things to the right
of her body, the name of the phobia in english is dextrophobia.

So, do you have any phobias?

Like most people, I loathe cockroaches.

Although they are a nuisance and do spread disease, I recognise that my distaste is out of proportion to their actual menace, and is most likely due to their plain ugliness and the creepy manner in which they move - the large American ones in particular. (This is not anti-Americanism on my part; the "American cockroach" is the actual name given to one of the species.)

Forget the roach - I'll just take the cock.

I fear a lot of things. My greatest is perhaps my fear of heights. Though I wouldn't go as far as to call it a phobia. I can't think of any phobia right now..

I had no idea that my phobia -- cockroaches -- was as widespread as the posts here seem to indicate. And, unfortunately, I live in a place (New Orleans) where my phobia gets stimulated often. At least, it's good to know I'm not alone. LOL

It may sound a bit weird, but I can't stand silence. Those times when there's barely some noise from the streets, or a clock ticking on the wall, I can resist 30 minutes on my best days, then I get moody and filled with sad thoughts...

That's quite usual I'd expect.

I choose silence when I want it, but doesn't mean I like noise, there are many pleasant sounds, but I find it hard to sleep in silence, I need chatter so always listen to a talk station at night. Prefer to listen to people talking than music.

Well, I don't know if it's usual, but I can't even study without listening to music, and sometimes it can be annoying...

And for me it's the exact opposite, too much noise at night and I won't get any sleep...

It sounds nuts for a qualified scientist, but the number 13 gives me the willies!

My phobia is probably irrational as we all must do it sometime, but I have the most intense fear of death.

I worry about whether I'd experience a painful death, who I'd be leaving behind, and despite I claim to be an atheist, I did grow up in a religious household, so I also worry about what if I was wrong about my disbelief in an afterlife.

I feel quite silly but borrowing somebodys bicycle is a phobia of mine.
Just thinking about it makes my stomache turn inside out.
I also have a phobia against elevators, I hate to be in them but
sometimes there is no other choice when a building don't have any
stairs.

Elevators. Going up or down one floor is enough to make me weak kneed and shaky.

And I know that the lift can be painfully slow
So I think I'll leave by the window.
