A laboratory in Maastricht (Netherlands) was able to produce the first artificial made hamburgers. It could be a break-through in producing meat . So no more need to kill animals in the future to serve meat, because the texture of the meat is identical to normal meat. Today it will be introduced to world scientists in London. There is still a slight problem, as all new inventions have, the costs. A bit expensive, 800.000 euro for three hamburgers.

This is great news for the Chinese who have been making fake pork, fake duck and fake fish from taufu for next to nothing. Now they can raise the price.

Hamburger van kweekvlees gepresenteerd in Londen
De Nederlandse wetenschapper Mark Post heeft maandag in Londen de eerste hamburger van kweekvlees gepresenteerd.

Hamburger of man made meat was presented in London (England)
The Dutch scientist Mark Post has on monday in London presented the first man made meat hamburger...

Then there is a very long article how he did it, most important probably is:

"Het vlees is wel minder sappig", zei Rützler. "Er zit geen vet in. Je proeft zeker verschil met een gewone hamburger."

"The meat is less juicy", said mr. Rützler. "There is NO FAT inside. You can taste the difference with a normal hamburger".

So my friends... Here is your first all you can eat hamburger without getting FAT :)

Something tells me this would be used in the future as sustenance for further space explorations.

I do share your worries Sal;in fact nearly every Hamburger worries me; they are not my taste. Last night I heard on the radio a bit more details about this project.

First of all it seemed strange that the work was done in Maastricht; the University of Wageningen would have been the more obvious place, because they are specialized food, plants and animals. Furthermore I do know they are doing there research on artificial meat production since many years.

It is possible that the whole hamburger issue is more or less meant for fund raising. The major financier of the project is one of the owners of Google; people who know to marketing stuff. The actual goal of the work in Maastricht could be research for creating human muscular cells, which could give great opportunities in repairing for example heart muscles. Such research would be more in line with the work they use to do in Maastricht.

Agreed Tjerk, I also think it will be more for medical purposes then to open a new hamburger restaurant. Just think if it will be possible to "grow" new lungs or a new liver from your OWN cells, probably it would be easier in a transplant if you should need new bodyparts :) I do not see this type of meat being sold soon in your local supermarket :p

I wouldn't be so sure of that. Watch a documentary called Food Inc. and you'll see were not far off from that now in our supermarket.

As it seems now mister Sergej Brin, one of the founders of Google has paid for this whole research...

It's nothing new that the stem cell can be turned into every possible cell type that you can imagine, using proper stimulation.

In this case stem cell is being manipulated into mucle fiber.

One day we will use stem cells to grow new organs to replace damaged ones!

Besides, how is this different from food stuffed with E-numbers and additives we can find almost everywhere?

Orange juice that contains only 1% of actual orange juice or similar...?

Human senses are easy to trick, and food industry uses that heavily!

This is a very nice experiment! :thumbs up:

Indeed. To get a decent structure they even train the artificial muscle fiber by electrical stimulation. But all you get at the moment is about the dimension of a rice grain. So you need a lot of those grains to create something of a proper dimension. But things will get easier in the future, I suppose.
