I not tolerate the food industry. The canned food, pre-cooked and packaged, aWith large flocks of poultry (chickens are scratching, do not stay locked up in small cages) and cows padded drug.

The food in plastic packaging. The fast food industry that is coming from America in Europe.

The food fat, full of shit where you eat shit, not knowing what to eat....

The food in the buckets, the mega food bought on the cheap ......

We will not die of hunger. But with food.

Well, fast food is not always industrial. We have p.e. Burger shops here, which only use fresh ingredients and fresh meat. Same with Steak sandwiches and pizza ...

It is a fact that more people die as a result of an unhealthy diet than die from the effects of smoking cigarettes. All that sugar and salt in mass produced food is killing people with diabetes and high blood pressure. Lack of fresh vegetables increases risk of cancer, every illness is worse when you only eat rubbish. So lets treat junk food like we treat cigarettes, you would have to show ID to buy it and to eat it you would have to leave the office and join the smokers behind the fire exit.

If you want to eat well, make your own food from basic ingredients! That's how our parents (and their parents, and their parents .....) have been doing it since time immemorial.

A few years ago my partner was diagnosed as Coeliac, and just about all mass-produced food is thickened with flower, so we were forced to start making our food from basic ingredient again. It was actually a great thing, I now buy fresh fruit, veg, and meat, and take it form there. We're eating much nicer and healthier food now than we ever did before!

You are literally quite correct when you consider that a lot of non-organic food is grown in biosolids, which is a euphemism for human sewage, i.e. everything that goes down our storm drains and our toilets and sinks.

I agree with the food industry having bad values. When I stroll around markets all the healthy food is lot more expensive (veggies etc.) than all the half-ready products. For many is not a real choice to eat healthy, because it's too expensive and the lifestyle these days is hectic, work follows you home and you have to cook for your children. Jamie Olivers 30 minute meals... I can't never do them even close to that time:p But living alone it's quit easy to eat healthier without it costing millions. It just needs a bit thought to be put into the matter and little bit of knowledge. Sadly, many people are brought up to eat industrial waste with salt and sugar, and when they eat somenthing healthy, it tastes horrible. They can't get their sugar and salt fix.

I used to visit a lot of pub-restaurants for work, and on the main menu there was usualy a choice of resonable food. But there was always also a kidz (sic) menu which went something like this;
Kidz Mealz
Chicken Dinosaurz and chips
Turkey Twizzlers and chips
Funky Fishies and chips
Saucy Sausage and chips
CocaCola included with all mealz

If only I had the courage to say to the parents 'You say you love your children, and yet youre allowing them to eat muck like this' but of course I never did, it would only lead to a punch in the mouth.
As adults we have every right to risk our health, eating, drinking, smoking and fucking as we please. We protect children under 18 from taking the same risks with alcohol, tobacco and sex, nobody would argue against those protections. Yet some businesses don't just permit but actively encourage children to learn the bad eating habits that will lead to ill health in later life.
It's a crime, isn't it.

I notice in this thread there is a lot of bad-mouthing of the food industry. To me that seems utterly miss-placed.

It is a simple fact of life that all publicly traded companies exist to make a profit. In fact, they have a fiduciary duty to do so, and shareholders can sue if they do things that are fiscally bad. This puts pressure on companies to make as much profit as possible by cutting back everything they can get away with.

Companies are not immoral, they are amoral, that is, they have no morals at all because they are not people (no matter what Mitt Romney says). Expecting companies to 'do the right thing' is just not realistic.

There is an actor who has a moral duty to step in though - the government! We elect them to protect us, and it is their duty to regulate the food industry. In Europe the governments are doing OK at that, not perfect, but not terribly. In the US however ...

If you want to be able to buy better food you need to push your elected officials to enact effective regulations. It can be simple stuff like mandating better labelling so those who care can make informed decisions more easily, to more extreme stuff like limiting fat and sugar content, and perhaps banning advertising of food substances to kids.

The world population grew by 168,000 people...today. We're now at 7 billion.
Industrial food production is here to stay.
Some people can opt out by buying carefully and cooking at home. For the rest of us, information is key.
After decades of the "low fat" mantra, nutritionists have decided that fat's not so bad. Now it's refined carbs and sugar that are suspect. (I hope they're right, since that's how I eat).
There are plenty of people who want to eat better, and have money to spend. The industry has responded with better products for those who want them.

'Bad mouthing of the food industry' Witty, at least I laughed.
Is our criticism missplaced or is it just impotent rage? The corporations are like pirates, running rings round legislation, owing loyalty to no country, evading tax, buying off political parties. What can anybody do? Ask the government and get soft soap from their industry sponsored placemen.
Nutrition labelling only works when people both read it and understand what it means. How about fag packet style labels

Can't see MaccyDs agreeing to that. Can't see them lovin' this one either;

In America, McDonald's and their ilk have a stagnant business. They're losing market share to better options. And they're responding with better options themselves (at least I'm told. I don't go to Mickey Ds.)
Even Wal-Mart (yes that Wall-Mart) is getting into the organic food business.

The upper end of the market can always get the best. But the down market providers are doing better too. Industrial food? Of course. but better.

It actually doesn't matter what problem you are trying to fix in America, step 1 is always the same - join the campaign for election finance reforms, it's the only way to get your democracy back. Once politicians care about the voters first, then all problems become infinitely easier to solve.

There's no arguing with that, if Americans want to own their own country again they will need to fight for it.
Back in good old Blighty, Burger King look to be slimming down and the golden arches are starting to go rusty, it's only Subway who keep on growing. I don't mind Subway, if you ask for all the salad and no sauce it's a healthy feed. If you ask for no salad and extra sauce then it stops being healthy. Who says there's no freedom of choice.
And I can never resist their special offer;
*Make yours a foot long, only £2 extra*
Best £2 I ever spent.
