Finally Got My Computer Totally Working

You ever have one of those weeks where when one thing breaks it seems like EVERYTHING breaks at the same time?

That's what I just went thru and finally got totally fixed last night.

First off, not sure what web site caused it but I ended up getting one of those virus' that brings up a screen that you cant get out of saying to call this number to pay to have your computer fixed. OMG it affected every browser. And I use all three. Explorer for Pandora, Chrome for Tumblr, and Foxfire for about everything else. So I ended up having to pay $70 for the company to send me restore disks, and another $100 on a new hard drive. Then had to wait the week and a half till the disks came. Then it wanted to keep updating and updating to catch up with everything. God, what a pain.

Then I went to move the computer from one location to the other and my little $39 speakers I accidentally ripped out the wires from the volume control when it got stuck behind my desk. Alright, crap, I'm going out and getting a good speaker bar this time. So went up to Best Buy and got a $200 LG. Sounds tons better than the old speakers so I'm happy.

But fuck me, I was about to throw bricks at Best Buy. I went in and told TWO people that I was going to hook it up to my computer, and they both said "yea sure, that's fine. All you'll need is an HDMI cord. So I spend $200 on the bar and another $25 on the HDMI cord. Get the thing home and set up, pairs quickly with my phone. (Yea, I can turn Pandora on without getting out of bed now) But when I go to put the HDMI from the computer to the bar, THE FUCKING THING DOESN'T FIT! So I read the instructions that say PLAIN AS DAY that you cannot hook it up like that to a computer. It has a USB port, but it's only for thumb drive type things.

So I drive BACK to Best Buy and see the same two rep and tell them it doesn't take the HDMI. So they tell me that then I'll need a USB Bluetooth adapter to put in the computer to make it Bluetooth since it isn't on it's own. OK, that sounds simple enough. THEY ARE OUT OF STOCK! They have to order one for me and have it shipped to the apartment. Oh, and by the way, that will be anothr $1.05.

Then lastly, while I was waiting for the Bluetooth, my damn mouse lazer stops working. It wouldn't read on any surface. And I hate using the laptop's mouse pad. I don't even use the laptop keyboard. I have both wireless mouse and keyboard. So off to Best Buy we go again for $30 for a new Logitech mouse.

Fucking finally! Last night, after $425 I have my computer working again. And yes, this time I put Norton on it. And since we have two laptops (Nick & I) that was another $70. So call it $495. It was an expensive week for the computer. Next up is just a whole new computer to boot. But the one I'm looking at is about $1000. Time to just shell out and make the investment.

So now that I have everything up and running the way it should, I can have fun in the forum now. Whew, thanks that that is over!

I really appreciate and relate to your post because I have this computer that I cherish because my late partner bought it for me as a birthday gift and in computer terms...IT IS CONSIDERED OLD!!!...(its a Dell XP Home Desktop with a CD/DVD Burner and they all are installed on a tower to say the least...) however...I do not want to get rid of it and the last computer guy that came to my home to repair has relocated to another state. Furthermore...it has been giving me a lot of trouble in regard to speed, space, etc....I know I need to start looking and pricing for a new one soon...or looking for a computer repairman who is knowledgeable enough to repair it...who knows..maybe I will get a new one for my BDAy...haha...

I feel your pain too and the subsequent relief. I am in exactly the same junction with my ten year old car. At what point exactly should we stop chasing money spent on repairs and move on to a new machine?

What really sucks about technology, and probably goes the same with cars, is that as soon as you get them out of the store, they are obsolete. I'm a fan on Samsung stuff, and I got a Note 3 phone last year February, but since then they have come out with the Note 4, the Note Edge, and next month they have the Galaxy S6 coming.

I know a lot of people think that they do this just so the companies can get more money out of us. I just think we have to be prepared to replace things every few years now rather than holding on to them forever. That's why I never get those extended warranties. By then it either cost to much to fix, or there is something better on the market to get instead.

But @trencherman, I know how you feel. I have a older Honda Civic that still works just fine. But I know if it ever starts having serious problems with the age I'll probably have to just a newer one. Not particularly looking forward to that day. I like my little car.

Even if the computer is upwards of a decade old, you can usually ring a few years of extra life out of it by backing up anything important, formatting the hard drive and re-installing the operating system (or install a new one). You will have to re-install any software you use and you'll also need to download drivers. If you're not sure how to do any of that, just do a few searches on Google and you'll find plenty of websites to help you through.

If you're already at the point where you're ready to buy a new machine, then you really don't have anything to lose doing as I mentioned. Over time, even with conservative use, the computer tends to grow a bit of bloat akin to a car engine developing sludge in the engine.

While you're at it, if you have less than 4gb of RAM, an upgrade will help speed things up. Furthermore, if you're hard drive is more than a few years old, a brand new one will be sure to fetch and store files much faster.
