The statement "For the life of me" is simply used as an exaggeration... Another way to look at it is simply saying "if my entire life depended upon it"
So as the entire statement goes, for the life of me, I cannot remember why I made such a remark, basically it can be translated as "I really cannot remember why I said those words, even if my entire life depended upon it"
