A Frisco man was sentenced Tuesday to 10 years in prison for assaulting a man because of his sexual orientation, the U.S. Department of Justice announced.
In a plea agreement, Chancler Encalade, 20, admitted that he and two others used Grindr, a social media dating platform for gay men, to arrange a meeting with the victim at his home. Once they were inside, they restrained the victim with tape, physically assaulted him and made derogatory statements about him being gay, federal officials said.
They also displayed a firearm and stole property from the man, including his vehicle.
A federal grand jury had previously returned an 18-count superseding indictment that included hate crime, kidnapping and carjacking charges. It also charged the defendants with conspiring to cause bodily injury because of the victims' sexual orientation during home invasions in Plano, Frisco and Aubrey from Jan. 17, 2017, to Feb. 7, 2017, officials said.
Encalade and co-defendant, Nigel Garrett, pleaded guilty following the hate crime charges. Garrett, 21, was sentenced in January to 15 years in federal prison in the case.
Their other co-defendant, Cameron Ajiduah, withdrew his guilty plea and did not accept a plea deal. He and another man, Anthony Shelton, are scheduled to appear in April at a federal court trial in Plano.
