but there are too many around to choose from

Flashget is alright.

If you're using Firefox, I'd suggest using their built in one DownThemAll in the add-ons area of their website. I've never had any problems with that one!

Im currently using Rapidshare + Flashget as a download manager and couldn't be happier, well designed and easy to use, not to mention quite powerful.

Can you pause resume downloads regardless? bECAUSE i always get corrupt :(((

Resume downloading depends totally on the site and if they allow it.
