Rock band , as opposed to Rock 'n' Roll (I'm a purist!!) for me would be Pink Floyd or Lynryd Skynyrd.

Don't mind the Beatles, but I'm not their no.1 fan lol Although the Sgt Pepper album is still one of my all time top albums!

Black Sabbath. But that's not rock, but hard rock or heavy metal. So Greatest rock band are: The Who, Led Zeppelin, Queen and The Animals.

I think I'd argue that point about Sabbath! They were an excellent rock band, with some of the greatest lyrics too! Very 70's "concept" albums , as they were called. Superb stuff.

Love The Animals too, and heck Led Zep, who can't love them

Queen, with Freddy Mercury, perhaps the greatest live performers ever, (with Paul Rodgers, I don't know what the fuck is going on there, but it sucks..)

Black Sabbath & Pink Floyd were the most innovative bands of the '70's

Lynard Skynard and The Allman brothers defined southern rock

Led Zepplin brought rock's blues background to the forefront of modern music

Metallica brought metal out of the garage and made it a serious contender in the music industry...(and thankfully, put an end to the Hair Bands..)

It's like potato chips, you can't stop at just one...

Pink Floyd just scrape in I think, but I always consider Rock bands as such are a thing that started in the 70's. I would say that Led Zeppelin was one of the best, but even they started out bluesy. Obviously this is all peoples opinions anyway and in the great melting pot of life we are bound to differ, That's what makes life so interesting.
