I know that Hallowen is a very BIG thing in the US. Some days ago I heard on the news that this year Halloween spending will hit a record $9.1 billion.
But in Slovenia is October 31st just an ordinary autumn day. OK, not just an ordinary day, it is Reformation Day, a religious and public holiday. It is celebrated in remembrance of the Protestant Reformation.
In the middle of the 90's Halloween slowly started to gain in popularity in Slovenia, but it still remains a rather marginal festivity. Halloween is not as popular or economically important as some ther ''imported'' celebrations such as St. Valentine's Day.
Celebrations are relatively rare and localised, that is they are organised only in certain night clubs. There are no Halloween movies on local TV channels around the time of Halloween as there are, for example, Christmas movies at Christmas time.
Only some elements of Halloween are slowly being appropriated such as curving pumpinks and, only partly, dressing up. For example, one would have a hard time buying a mask in a local store or supermarket as only specialised stores sell masks at this time.
Wishing you a happy Halloween filled with loads of great adventures!
