HIDDEN LINKS

Many posters (myself included) post their video/picset links as hidden so that you have to click the thanks button to see them. I've done this in part to avoid links getting killed by bots scanning the boards, but also as a way to find out how many people are interested in a particular video.

I've made about 1/4 of my links wide open so guests can get them, but it's mostly older stuff less likely to get snagged.

So what's your opinion of hidden links?

I click Thanks on almost every post I view even if I don't agree with it; posts I download or not I might click Thanks, too.

It's a way of showing respect and appreciation for the effort by the person posting and/or sharing.

I almost always HIDE any links I post to encourage others to be just a little bit involved in the transaction of sharing and receiving otherwise they might take this whole 'Private' market for granted.

I'm not sure the HIDE tool actually protects links from spiders, crawlers and bots but it does leave a paper trail if a human spy/snitch is among us and if everyone used HIDE it might help to ferret them out but it's a daunting task or so I've been told, hehe.

Great thread Hyp! But then I always enjoy your posts. You not only share generously but you add a little levity to the experience and that's appreciated just as much.

I think it should be mandatory, yet I'm a bit glad I can just click a button rather than going through the "trouble" of typing a thank you post. More time to download! Thanks for your sharing.

I think the Thanks function is okay for hidden links. It's more that every post can be thanked. The principal of internet likes has just recently been confirmed by the former president of Facebook. Likes provide small dopamine hits. People tend to post what they think will be liked. Posts with insufficient or no likes may get deleted. Generally I find likes or thanks questionable. I am being nice or polite or do I contribute to someone's like addiction?

I have a decidedly minority opinion but, for the few links I share, I avoid 'hiding' them. In real life I try to have no truck with those who might thank me without even looking at me, let alone making eye contact, so I much prefer sincerity to politeness - to draw from economics, what is rare is precious.

I guess I'm in the minority too because I hide nothing . If I were posting to build up "thanks" I certainly wouldn't be so active in the streaming area where periodically I will loose thousands upon thousands  I would probably just carry the badge and do nothing there..... If you do want to rack them up and keep them, I suggest posting a lot in the community section ...

I think for downloads they are needed to prevent bots from finding them and they help keep links live longer.

I know they can be annoying sometimes, but I think they are necessary.
