Historic: The Internet Protests Anti-Piracy Bills

S

It is the day tens of thousands of websites, including giants such as Google, Wikipedia and Reddit, decided to take a stand against what they see as a hostile takeover of the Internet by Hollywood, the recording industry, and other rightsholders. As it faces two draconian anti-piracy bills, the free Internet is at stake.

Hopefully it won't because this will be chaos. First of all yes we all know Hollywood is loosing money because of Internet piracy for their forever becoming boring films. At least with the Internet we get a chance to take a peek at the movie before wasting money on it. They have been stealing people's money with bad productions for over 20 years now and they'll blame the net for the lack of creativity.

Don't Americans knows what happens when they go nuts and try to censure everything... they normally creates another issue which will often be 10 time worst then what they were initially trying to do. Instead of trying to find new strategies to help their people and other to participate in their declining economy they prefer once again put fences on their lots. Fences will be blown, they will be stepped and they know that for a fact very well. Corporations will go too far, they will start whining because somebody has registered the letter B in their domain name, and because they happens to have the letter B they'll sue you for intellectual property. Making you the little business pay a serious amount of cash just so you can use that letter "B". This will go out of hands and more illegal practices will emerges from their famous bills. When the net geniuses will have enough, Internet war will start, Hollywood will loose more than money when the Net revolution will explose.

Therefore all of you out there... beware, there was a question earlier this week regarding people whom sing along when listening to music on their Ipod or whatever music players... so now let's turn this to what I suggest it will come up to soon enough; you'll have to get a license to whistle, hum or sing along when listening to your favorite music. Yes I know it's sound stupid... but hey you have seen how very idiot public corporations can be sometimes when trying to explain why they haven't made profit in this quarter. They will stop you on subway, streets, buses, ask if you rightfully downloaded this music from an approved websites, and if not you'll be brought to the nearest police station. I know I go to the worst scenario... but sorry I have seen enough of what America can do and that is just the tip of the iceberg. This bill will be voted by conservator old dudes who cannot even spell Internet correctly, but I guess they'll have all a special blocks of IP that will definitely let the elite roam free while everyone else will be reduced in the freedom of speech. Congratulation America you strike again...

But don't worry sweetie we'll get you back I promise you that

I did my bit today - blacked out my personal website.

I'm not a US citizen, so that's all I can do, but, those of you in the US, please please please please please ring your congressman and your senator to register your views!

It takes a lot of people to out-balance lobbyists with billions in cash!

Unfortunately, copyright legislation is one of the best bets for bipartisan support in congress. Republicans and democrats alike both tend to blindly pass anything in that area. The DMCA just strolled right on through back in the early 2000s. Hopefully, however, SOPA won't pass. One thing the DMCA did not have against it is a collective of web-centered corporations along with a large and diverse vocal user-base knowledgeable on an issue at hand.

I think a more effective protest/attack would be for one of the hacker groups like "anonymous" to go and put every member of the House, the Senate, and Congress on the "No Fly" and "Terrorist" watch list...

I believe the above would result in a kind of PATRIOT act 2.0 and/or the forming of a TSA for the internet. Though I agree they deserve it.

That would be more FUN, not more productive!

That would cement the idea in to the politicians mind that that movie industry is trying so hard to implant, that only criminals are against this law!

And, as c750dt says, they'd probably go steal some more civil rights in the name of security in return!

I'd just like to ask one thing. When you say American please say the American government, because this American made sure to in some way contact his local senate representative to highlight the negatives of internet censorship. When you say Americans or America wants to do that. it is not true. Put the blame where it belongs, on the "old guys" that run our country and want to vote on this bill in the first place. Man what I'd give to have been born about 10 miles away in Canada.

I don't think anyone thinks a whole country thinks the same way (I sure hope not), but America is a representative democracy, so it cannot be denied that the American Government are the people chosen by over half of the Americans who bother to vote. America is not a dictatorship, so the American people can't deny their responsibility for their government.

I don't mean to be harsh, but I think it's perfectly reasonable to judge a democratic nation by the actions of it's democratically elected government.

In the last election the Tea Party got the support of the electorate, and moderates were purged. A pro-corporate congress is EXACTLY what Americans voted for, so why should they get a free pass? Elections have consequences!
