I have been trying to use HJsplit to combine files but its only worked once or twice. Often the 001 file isn't recognized by HJSplit even if the file has the correct extension, for example, .avi.001 but HJSplit won't recongize it. This happens frequently, I've only had HJSplit work once or twice. The file I downloaded has a File Type of "Video Clip" and not 001 as the rest of the files in the series do, would this matter ?
I've tried to use a second file, MSPT32 but this has the same problem, it seldom recognizes the first file so they can't be compiled.
I sometimes download the first file and view it to see if I want to download the rest, might this be the problem ?
I went to the HJSPLIT help page but it was no help.
This is such a cumbersom system, I may have to use this web page to preview files and then go the movie maker and pay to download the complete files.

Is there spaces or brackets in the name? Like, "something (3) something.avi.001"? If there is, take them off "something3something.avi.001" or name the files something new, "aaa.avi.001" as long as you just keep the .avi.001 .avi.002 etc in correct order.

Viewing the first file doesn't matter, and it's supposed to different from the rest.

As triple 7 said before opening the file with HJSplit just make sure that all files have a consecutive naming convention, and that all files have been download properly... and this mean properly sometime if you download through Firefox without a download manager, it could happen that the size of one download to another are different... if you download three files the first 2 files are the same size and often the last section is smaller. Always verify your files before joining them all together and you'll save a lot of time.

Hi Jim... This is odd, HJSplit is usually very dependable. If/when you have the problems again post the links to the posts here so that we can check them out and try and identify the issues.

Hi Guys,
Thanks for your responses in such a short time.
777, I was careful to make sure the file name appeared correctly but it didn't matter. I even eliminated the spaces between the words in the title, made it one long word, and it made no difference. There must be something wrong with the file, as far as HJSplit is concerned (the first file playes so its not corrupted). If I start typing the file name in then HJSPLIT will present the file name itself, but when I click on OK to begin it told me it couldn't find the file, even though it had offered me the name. It doesn't make any sense unless the file type (video clip) is incorrect and it should be file type 001.
I suppose its possible HJSPLIT just hates me but that is something you usually don't see in software applications. : )
I should also mention that I bought a new computer that came with Windows 7, (which sucks, but not in the good sense) so I don't know if Windows 7 is a contributing factor in this problem.
Jaketorento, I downloaded this in Internet Explorer 32 bit and didn't see any error messages. The download of all the files seemed to go smoothly, I'm not sure what server I downloaded them from but I can find out.
SlimJim.....I not sure what you mean by links ? When I try to run HJSPLIT it doesn't list the file in question as an 001 or first file so I can't compile the rest. If I start to type in the file name then it will complete the file name, as if its in this folder, but when I click on ok, it says file not found. That is the only error message I see. I had no error messages when I downloaded the file. The file in question was The Taste of Temptation, it was Asian and I downloaded it from here but I'm not sure of the server I downloaded it from.
Will WinRar compile .001 files or does that only work with Rar files, not unrar files ?

I downloaded this 001 file for a third time and this time HJSPLIT did allow me to compile the files but it didn't really compile them. It simply compiled the first, 001 file but ignored the rest despite the fact that all 9 parts had the same file name. The finished file should have been 150 K time 9 but instead the finished file was only 150k. I will continue to fool around with this for a while but if your trying to view a 45 minute move and you spend 40 or 50 hours trying to get it to compile, its probably not worth it. It is probably smarter to just pay to download the complete file from the maker.
I downloaded this file from MediaFire three times, the first two times the 001 file was 91K, the third time, the time that worked was 150K and so I think that was why HJSPLIT wouldn't recognize it as an 001 file, it wasn't complete. Also, the extensions were different each time, the last time it had ext. (01) while the rest of the files had .002, etc. I'm not paying to download these files but I'm not likely to do that with this kind of service, that only occasionally works.

Do you mean the file type that appears in options, if you look at the file, and not in the name? The first file has to have the extension .001, and as long as the file name is exactly the same in all parts except for the .001 .002 .003 there is no problem with it. Have you tried moving the whole thing to another folder and trying again there? You can also check your folder settings, make sure it doesn't hide extensions.

Have you tried DLing with other browsers? That might solve your problem.

ETA: The file downloaded perfectly and doesn't seem to be faulty. (I'm using Firefox.) There's spaces in the name so I'd have to take them off to compile the file but without seeing the rest I don't see a problem in it.

Well here is the link to squiggle's post:

http://www.gayheaven.org/showpost.php?p=683305&postcount=13

and all the files seem to be labelled OK - .001 to .009 - with the 1st 8No. being 147.22 Mb and the last one of 22.71Mb.

@JamesL - I'm presuming that you have d/loaded all 9 files and that they are all are in the same folder. From what you say about it finding only the 1st file I wonder if maybe the 2nd or a later file is corrupt or incomplete.

Try checking the files sizes of all 9 . If one of the first 8 is NOT the 147 MB or the last isn't 22 Mb size then HJSplit will not be able to join the movie until you have all 9 "correct" files.

Do you really mean K? Or is that a typo?. As has been said, the files are 147.22MB. Second point: it is an absolute impossibility for a file to change it's file extension during download! I have just downloaded the .001 file and it has the correct extension and is the correct size.
Bear with me because there are many ways of joining split files and what I'm going to describe requires some effort from both of us. First, please confirm that you have all 9 files, that 8 are 147.22MB and the last, 22.71MB. If so, and if you want to follow this route, download a free program called QuickPar:
http://anonym.to/?http://www.quickpar.org.uk/Download.htm
and install.
I will have to re-split the original movie using QP, download the entire movie from MF and check that the posted movie joins using a small file that QP creates, called a par2 file. I will then upload that par2 file to MF and once you have downloaded it, you use it to join your files.
Do you want to try this? Please let me know before I continue downloading.

HI 777,
I finally got it compiled. The file type I mentioned in a previous message was the thing that shows up as 002, 003, etc. I thought maybe the file wouldn't compile because it lacked the 001 designation but apparently that wasn't it. The problem was that the first part wasn't complete, I downloaded that first file twice and both times it wasn't complete, the third time I downloaded it, it was complete and so it would compile but only the first file, the 001 file. Tonight I downloaded a second .002 and then it compiled the whole 9 files to complete the film. I don't know why my original 002 file was causing a problem, the second file appeared identical to the first but the second worked.
Thanks to everyone who helped, I'll try not to come back here too often for help.
One would think that computers would be logical and we wouldn't have these kinds of problems but, apparently, we do.
Jim
