I'm a song writer and i'm trying to find a general theme that i can put into my music that will make me stand out from others. So i decided to start writing about atheism and gay themed romance. Basically normal love songs, just real.

But i was wondering if it would really make a difference to you if i had a gay theme or if any artist had a gay theme. Would you listen to me rather than others? All my friends say it really wouldn't matter to them but it would matter to me. Like Lady Gaga and David Bowie.

heres a demo of what im talking about: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b24Yx5zJQBo&feature=player_embedded

I don't think i ever posted on here before. Which is weird cause i come on here like everyday. Im just a creepy who likes to read things.

I don't think it would make a difference. I've never heard a gay love song ever. Most of my music is all about rip the system and whatever goth stuff.

There are gay themed love songs out there... and a great artist to mention would be pop singer Ari Gold. Openly gay and Jewish, his music always mentions love from a gay standpoint and he is very talented.

Check out some of his songs like "Wave of You" on YouTube and his album, "Transport Systems" if you ever get the chance. You'll be pleasantly surprised.

As I don't identify myself as only being a gay man, I couldn't care less about a gay theme anything. I like music for their melodies and rythms, I like poetry for their powerful emotions, I like movies for their entertainment, theatre for the absurd and men for their masculinity. So I don't care one way or the other about a gay theme in music, and if it's Broadway style or pop music style, I run the other way. Nothing will ever assemble every gay men, we are way too much different from one another, the only resemblances we have are being humans and preferring guys.
I kind of agree. However - as a songwriter, you have to write about things you feel, not second-guess what you think your audience feels. If someone hears your song and it resonates with their own life experiences, so much the better.

George Michael has done a number of songs on the theme of gay sex/gay love/ gay loss, eg.: "Outside", "Too Funky", "You Have Been Loved". There are a number of other well-known songs: "The Killing of Georgie" by Rod Stewart; "Small Town Boy" by Bronski Beat. Don't force it, write what comes natural to you.

As a writer you should write what you know and what you feel.

I'd like to see and hear more representation in mainstream, or even independent, media for GLBT folks. It's nice to find those and feel that someone understands and speaks to you.

Ari Gold has been mentioned. He's really good. Bronksi Beat, and their song "Small Town Boy," are a favorite of mine.

Some others you might want to check out: Mark Weigel, Doug Stevens, and Jeff Miller for country; the duo Romanvsky & Philips do (or did, don't know if they perform much anymore) a lot of satire, spoofs and comedy.

Thank you for the confidence builder guys. Still not complete sure which way i should go yet but I'm going to keep this one the way it is in terms of lyrics and others i have made so far. I will do whats in my heart but try to be clever in my wording so i can expand into a larger audiants but maintain and grab the attention of mostly gay teens and adults.

Of course, if he feels like writing a song, it's his to write it the way he feels it. I never said anything to the contrary. I am an artist too and I would never let anybody tell me what I should paint, sculpt or write anymore than I would tell another artist what or how to do their artwork. Though it's about our own opinion here, not about what the author of the thread feels. He asks us if it would make a difference to us, not to him, and on my part, because a song has a gay theme, it wouldn't attract me in the least. My tastes in music aren't influenced by that. And it doesn't mean that I wouldn't like the song, though it would have to meet other criterias than simply being a gay themed song, which, to me, has no importance at all. My review would certainly be about the quality of the melody, of the beats and of the lyrics' form (prose/poetry), its originality and even the quality of the message it brings if there's a message attached to it, but having said that, I won't favor a song because its message has a specific theme. It needs to find another way to get to me.

Cool i got you

Totally agree!:thumbs up: The hetero world abounds with songs above love lost, love regained, love unrequited, sad love, angry love, etc. etc. There's no sane reason why gay men and women can't enjoy good music with lyrics crafted to speak to their orientation and preferences.

I am kind of sick of hearing songs that only include a heterosexual point of view; really beautiful songs sung by boys with nice voices but always/only using female names and pronouns. Even some gay/bi musicians do this, and I think it is a cop out. So while I do have tastes, I would also like to hear music that speaks to me in that way.

Gay oriented love songs are fewer, more artistic, elegant and discreet.
