I don't remember the current price around here as I haven't driven for years, don't like it and have no need to where I live, but the UK is about twice the price of the USA at least!

I am Plainfield born, East Brunswick raised.

You guys can't even pump your own.
I used to drive the attendants nuts when I grabbed the hose to fill my 72 Cutlass, always go to the same station and you can too.

We don't have the La Costa Nostra garbage collection companies here in California that I grew up with in Jersey. We have democrats! They are worse.
Our gas is ground and ocean pumped instate, 25% of what we use.
Never saw a well in Elizabeth, but sure smelt those refineries.

CA elected officials control both the price and collection points.
And our Governor.

Now your question's answer:

I run High Test in my current Pontiac Formula Firebird.
$3.15/gal at the lowest priced stations.
Maybe it costs $2.95 for just the plain gas.

How cool...another NJ to CA transplant...only problem I'm back in NJ...and being in Kearny, I now have the pleasure of sucking in all those carcinigens spewing from the refineries. No wonder I was a fucked up kid.

Actually no, I'm wrong - the price you pay for a gallon would buy about 1.3 litres, so that's about three times as much. Mind you, I suppose we don't have quite as far to go before we end up in the sea.

Because up until recently diesels were noisy, smelly, dirty, and unresponsive. Not to mention that other than large truck engines, the American auto industry can't build a diesel engine worth a shit, anyone remember the 350ci. Oldsmobile diesel? Detroit's failed early attempts at creating, reliable, small displacement (by American standards) diesel motors sullied the diesels reputation and soured Americans against them. And being Americans, we are stubborn, pig headed and slow to accept change.

And because of our old fashioned attitudes toward diesels, most auto makers won't even offer the new diesel models to American customers because they don't see projected sales being high enough to cover the cost of getting them certified for use in the U.S.

Smart actually found it was cheaper to design an entire new version of the Smart for 2 using a gasoline engine than to get the turbo diesel used in Europe certified for the U.S. based on projected sales of the diesel vs. gas models. And the sad part is that the gas model only gets 40MPG vs. over 60MPG for the diesel model that's actually faster...

At present, Volkswagen and Mercedes are about the only companies willing to risk offering diesel models to the U.S.

But I guess the short answer is that Americans are just too stupid to accept that the new diesels are much better...:?

I don't think we have that many diesel cars over here. Most run on unleaded petrol (gas).

How long has it been since you drove? :p

41% of new vehicle registrations in the UK are diesel powered vs. 3% in the US, and in France it's 70%...
