I had a job picking up dead bodies for the coroners office, you know from accidents, murder scenes, suicides and people who had died and know one realized it for several weeks...

Well now this is a pretty horrific occupation. Questions! What was it like... what impressions did the work make on you... was there a particular job/body/incident that sticks in your memory??? The phrase "but somebody's gotta do it" comes to mind.

Well, that's about the same time I started drinking a lot...:p I didn't just pick up bodies all day, it was only once or twice a week. My main job was as a dispatcher and an ambulance driver. I didn't do emergencies, I did transfers, mostly for the VA and I also drove wheelchair vans taking disabled people and retarded kids to doctors, physical therapy, and even work.

At the time our county didn't have a coroners wagon, so they contracted with my company to pick up the bodies, and the task fell upon whoever was on duty and available when the call came in.

As for the ones that stick in my mind, there are several...
a triple homicide during a convenience store robery...
a motorcycle accident where the guy was decapitated (his head was still in the helmet)...
a gay guy who picked up a bad trick and was strangled and his body stuffed into a pull out sofa bed...
a guy went into a tavern, jumped up on the bar, put a .38 in his mouth and blew grey matter all over the back bar...
a 17yo that took his head off with a 12 ga. shotgun because his girlfriend dumped him on Valentine's Day...
A transvestite who died from auto-erotic asphyxiation, Black leather mini-skirt, patent leather pumps, gay porn mag (Inches I think) lying next to him, plastic bag over his head, and his still hard cock in hand...

But the two that stand out the most were...

Kibbles-N-Bits, a guy murdered his girlfriend, dismembered her body (into very small pieces) and buried it in several unmarked graves spread out over three counties. So much paper work, we had to fill out separate forms for every county a body part was found in...

And they say you always remember your first...
A man died from a heart attack in his sleep, no one missed him. He had been in a closed up apartment with no open windows or air conditioning for at least three weeks, in the middle of summer... The smell of rotting human flesh is something that will stick with you for the rest of your life. For six months after that I could smell it everywhere I went, and still ten years later I will catch a whiff of something that reminds me of it...

P.S. Isn't it funny that this sticks out in my mind as being a shittier job than when I was a sniper in the Marines...

I also work in a business where I have a passing acquantance with things like this this and you are absolutely right Brm! Mine were murder victims left unchecked in an unventilated apartment for 3 weeks also in the summer....(BOY were they puffy and disgusting! EEWWW!)

The SMELL is hard to describe but impossible to forget...and yes you do get little sharp ACRID whiffs of this or that THAT TOTALLY bring you back to that situation.
It's not only an offensive smell but SHARP and sickeningly disgusting! Goes right to your nose and that's where the smell-memory comes from I think...anything close bring you right back there - EWW!!

I also witnessed (after the fact) a guy getting his head run over by a steamroller on a construction site - up close - TOO CLOSE for me. Just a body ending in a big flat red bloody splotch - with a big patch of white which I guess was his brain....fucking horrifying things you try to push out of your mind but you'll never forget...much like guys who go to war or have other horrifying encounters with real life...UUGGHHH!!!! I can't imagine being a funeral director or a coroner and dealing with this everyday.
