Wow, Kane; this is actually quite the thought provoking question...

To "need" someone means that you consider them a necessity, which is quite strong; but just like "wants", necessities can eventually end. Once you need something and hopefully or eventually get it, then what? I mean, you can need more of it but in the end, you're just getting more of the same thing.

Love can grow or change depending on the circumstance. It's just as strong as a "need" and oddly enough, everybody needs love in some form of it; whether it's from a friend, a pet or even a lover... but love can be quite the tricky emotion. You never know which way it can go or what it can do to you.

A strong need to have someone in your life doesn't necessarily mean you love them, but a strong love for a person doesn't always mean you need them around. I guess it all depends on the circumstance, but I'd rather have a longer love than a shorter need.

I guess the "I love you" would be the stronger of the two for me.

Wow, Kane; you really made me think on this one. Very good question! :)

I think its very simple.....I would say "I Love You" means so much more than "I Need You". The latter is more of a possession so to speak. Last year, this guy that I had no interest in especially when I found out he was a family man who claimed that he was divorced with several kids and yet, even though she had "outed" him to his job, he still had an incredible bond with her. I remember telling him that I was not interested and one of the facts were that he had a lot of baggage which would turn off any guy who is single and free. He replied..."I Need You"..But, have you ever notice how gay guys are so quick to say "I Love You" when they really don't know anything about you..???...Call me sensitive...But it really annoys me when that happens because I feel that those are three of the most powerful words in the universe...and yet they are used so sparingly...

By my own admission I am pretty fucked up in this area and I find someone loving me (in a romantic way) to be a huge weight that I don't need. Whereas I am perfectly fine with being needed. But I am definitely not normal in that regard.

Generally though, I would say that being loved is far more powerful than being needed, because the latter can actually be negative. I know a lot of people who need other people because they are lonely or lack confidence or need security etc. Although I do agree with the earlier statement that some people throw around "I love you" as if they're talking about a new Britney Spears song ... but eventually people with a brain will realize that taking love lightly will have consequences.

This is a poem that I wrote a little over a year ago...its my perspective of what I think love is...I would like to share it...

Love Defined

What is love, but an emotion,
So strong and so pure,
That nurtured and shared with another
All tests it will endure?

What is love, but a force
To bring the mighty low,
With the strength to shame the mountains
And halt time’s ceaseless flow?

What is love, but a triumph,
A glorious goal attained,
The union of two souls, two hearts
A bond the angels have ordained?

What is love, but a champion,
To cast the tyrant from his throne,
And raise the flag of truth and peace,
And fear of death overthrow?

What is love, but a beacon,
To guide the wayward heart,
A blazing light upon the shoals
That dash cherished dreams apart?

And what is love, but forever,
Eternal and sincere,
A flame that through wax and wane
Will outlive life’s brief years?

So I’ll tell it on the mountaintops,
In all places high and low,
That love for you is my reason to be,
And will never break or bow.

Well if we look at Maslow's hierarchy of needs....an actual NEED is on the bottom of the pyramid. Things like love are somewhere higher up on the pyramid.

A need would be something very primal, with very little psychological complexity behind it. If you say "need" I feel like it equates more to lust.

Higher needs are built upon primal desires, but involve much more psychological complexity (essentially you think more, you care more). "Love" is something much stronger than "need" because you need to put more effort in to understand love and to love somebody.
