A thought is present tense, I think. Once a thought is captured in your brain we call it memory, which is past tense. Your brain becomes a kind of enceclopedia where you can find things that help you thinking. A lot of people find a person with a big enceclopedian brain intelligent. I disagree with that opinion. For me intelligence means the capacity for creative thinking, to develop new thoughts. I never understood why you had to learn to remember formulas at school instead of understanding them properly and have the ability to use them. I am a supporter of the possibility to bring and use whatever a student wants when he has to do an exam. Teachers should take the effort to make exams that appeal to creative thinking instead of reproducing facts. For the last thing modern times invented the computer.
