if these clips you want to have joined does have exactly the same parameters they don't need to be converted, there several apps around who join them easily.
i do use Boilsoft Video Joiner
or Boilsoft Video Splitter for such things
there are "free" versions around in the warezworld , i use the portable versions.
Virtual Dub has also a filter for it but it's not recommended for beginners
