I'm glad Obama is now backing us at 100% but don't you feel anti-gay sentiments are rising? I do and it's obvious. I live in Canada where same-sex marriage is equal and no church is obligated to officiate gay weddings.

If gay marriage was made legal in the States, I'm sure a clause would stipulate no church would be legally required to celebrate it. Gay couples would simply go get married at civil courthouses or at churches that are okay with gay unions.

So, what's the big freaking deal???

Unfortunately there are too many ignorant Americans who shroud their bigotry in "religion" and feel that the bible should trump The Constitution. They are fed daily lies by FOX News and revel in their own ignorance and "moral superiority." I'm quite ashamed of my country as a whole. And quite frankly it's useless to argue facts with people who are too stupid to listen.

Obama is not "backing us 100%." There is more to gay rights then marriage. There are a disproportionate number of homeless GLBT youth living on the streets, and the social service funding to alleviate this issue is being cut by both the right wing democrats and republicans. Many of these kids, abused and thrown out of their homes, are sexually exploited on the streets. There is no "big deal" about marriage rights, there is in giving poor, disadvantaged GLBT people the economic rights they deserve; something corporatists like Obama remain homophobic on, and will for some time to come.

That is true there is more to GLBT equality than just marriage. I mean what about bullying in schools? Job discrimination. All kinds of things.

I'm an optimist on the subject. Legal rights are moving foward. Is there a pushback? Sure. That's the nature of civil rights movements.
Even more important, the culture is accepting gay people more and more. The change among young people is amazing to me.
Bigotry will linger, of course, but society is seeing the bigots as the problem. Not the gays.

To quote the prez... "Know Hope".

It's a great time to be gay in America!

I wish I could share your enthusiasm, but after seeing the photos of "Chick-Fil-A Appreciation Day" I'm more disheartened than ever.

In America, we, the gay community, have the right to be and to choose freely who we love and all of that. But, please... only within the comfort and privacy of our houses. Straight socierty cannot and will not handle the disgusting spectacle we give to their very impressionable children and teenagers (I mean, two guys or two girls kissing... EW). Lest they become an abomination like us! Because, y'know... you CAN turn gay by watching Glee and RuPaul's Drag Race.

Gay rights my ass. We'll achieve them in time, yes, but the road is and will be a long, tiresome and treacherous one. Ignorance and hate are still rampant within our society. One thing I can say is; It'll get worse before it gets better. We have to be strong. Stronger than any men or women out there. We will persevere.

I don't feel it's limited only to America. I think we're witnessing a rise of social conservatism of some sort all over the world.

You boys (and girls) want your rights now!!! Good for you. Kick some ass. There's no reason to be patient.
But don't just bitch. We have an election coming up. And not just the White house. Everybody's up. It's an election that matters. Keep the crazies out of the house and senate if you can.
And Mr Romney. I know he has great hair, but he is not your friend.

For myself, I'm getting old. I look at the arc of history for gay rights, and it's a real comfort to me.

main difference between America especially States and Europe is fatalism. Europeans has ability to take things not too seriously. Anyway I guess people in states who are gay-friendly are truly gay friendly and agree with equality in all rights. These who are agains are totally against. In Europe and especially in my country is most of society somewhere between. They are tolerant, but not respectful. They say: "you want registered partnership, fain, why not, I don't care about other people and their wifes or husbands, so why I should care about you. But childern adoption - no. I'm sorry but I think a child needs mother and father." Also European wiew on sex and nakedness is much more liberal. Few years old scandal with Janet Jackson and her breast within Super Bowl wouldn't make anyone here mad (or at most one from 10.000). These Czechs who spotted it was double entertained, at first by main accident, at second by stupid american reaction.
Bulling in schools is biggest problem I would say. More important than seeking for reasons why some students are so violant is how to stop it. I think headmester and teachers should be responsible. They should care what is happenig in their school and protect anyone who need protection. With prevention but also with restrictions against agressors.
Main thing which makes gay rigts are gays who are out of closet. If you see some public opinion research from any country you find out that more gayfriendly are these who knows some gay personally. Who knows no one is at most restrained. If you won't tell others who you are, They will tell it you. So lets be gay.

mrpiz: is person on the picture male or female ? :)

You're quite right there actually, we do in general laugh a lot more at ourselves and everything in Europe, and we have that great weapon, sarcasm, especially in the UK :))

One significant factor is religion. In America it would be impossible to become President unless they are God fearing, in the UK any top politician who is too God orientated is viewed by most with suspicion. The next potential UK PM is a declared aethiest and that is probably a point in his favour !

In some areas of Europe it's probably not the same but religion, which is always used against gay issues, is not as tightly rung around the issues as in the USA.

I very much enjoyed the jovial sarcasm the Brits directed at our Mister Romney last week.
Cheers, Xman!
