boo0,

You can install VMware Player (http://www.vmware.com/products/player/) and then a VMware image which will let you run Linux, or any other OS, in a window on your regular OS.

Ubuntu posts a bunch of VMware images at http://isv-image.ubuntu.com/vmware/, or you can have a look at a huge collection of images for a variety of Linux distributions at http://www.thoughtpolice.co.uk/vmware/. There are plenty of others if you Google for "linux vmware image"

You'll usually need a few hundred MB or more on your host PC for the image of the guest filesystem, but it's stored in a regular file and doesn't require re-formatting or partitioning.

No problems at all, it runs completely independently. I use VMware to run Linux on my company PC. It will install a couple of virtual network drivers so the guest OS can access your LAN connection, and it can map USB devices over to the guest OS too.
