MICROSOFT has launched its new motion-sensing video game gadget Kinect and a slimmer version of the Xbox 360 gaming console ahead of the E3 expo.

Kinect, formerly known as Project Natal, was launched at a giant presentation in Los Angeles that bordered on the bizarre.

More than 3000 attendees were asked to wear light-up satin ponchos before cramming into an arena to see Cirque de Soleil performers and a fake elephant introduce the new accessory.

The gadget will go on sale in the US on November 4, but Microsoft Xbox 360 entertainment and devices head David McLean said Australians would have to wait until shortly after that date to get their hands on it.

Microsoft has not yet set a price for the gadget.

Kinect will use two cameras to detect players' limbs and let them control games using their movements rather than controllers.

This looks awesome lol. A Wii without that annoying little controller to hold on to, but no controller means they cant do very much with it, unless that sensor bar is really sensitive. Regardless I want one :p

this is prewtty cool i guess but i think more people were impressed by the ps3's move--which i will admit so was i---like one person mentioned already everything based on the camera is ok to an extent but to have that with the ps3 eye plus the controller seems to be more dead on..

I don't see what the big deal is? The Wii did motion capture like 4 years ago and everyone hated it...now Sony and MS are basically doing slightly upgraded versions of the same thing and it's "innovative?"

well... is long as most ppl would enjoy it, then yeah - making money was always "innovating"
in fact look at wii - ppl are having a blast by hitting invisible targets on the screens, waving a stick as if he was bowling ball and swinging the same sticks as if they use them to punch out opponents

When I worked at call center for an electronic store, we sold wii's. You would not believe how fast those damn thing flew off the shelf. It was not kids buying them it was adults and the elderly so they can use the wii fit or wii sports, any of the health games for it. The adults wanted it. We could never keep the wii fit balance board in stock. Sold out in a day.

I think Microsoft and Sony will try and capitalize on the fitness market too.
