My Problems With Historically Based Shows/Movies

Ok so we know the trend of "period movies" have been popular since cinema and TV has been around, but many shows are not always truly accurate to what the show might be trying to emphasize. For example The Tudors show can over exaggerate the historical things that could have happened to make it "more interesting to the modern public" ~X:)rolling eyes: As we do know Henry VIII was a very sexual man but they chose to make him skinny for the show for the purposes of the show. By know in the period that the show is on now he is supposed to be morbidly obese and pretty much as wide as a king size bed (yes I am exaggerating here but in that time this would have been right). It seems like they go through a wife or so a season, but at the end of this season 4 coming this next spring they must go through two or so wives before he might die on screen. Who knows if they will spin off to the royal children that include Edward, Elizabeth, and Mary. Would be a cool idea though. I have visited the Tower of London a few times and no there is no elaborate torture areas underground like shows might depict. The only torture area was one room and that was it. They were possibly imprisoned in formal rooms but that was it. Like Anne Boleyn oddly was housed in the same room that she was going to see her last hours in....and years ago she used the room to be royal lodgings before she got crowned. They do depict her speech before her death VERY accurate to what happened since it was from the written recordings of the speech itself. From a developing historian and writer's point of view this is really damaging what people can learn about history. Watching TV shows then like oooooh no that didn't happen while you learn about the REAL stuff in classes doesn't always please a professor or teacher. One thing for sure the death of Henry VIII is still debated since he could have died of MANY different causes. I have seen his armor in person and he was a pretty big man in his late years so it could have been gout, obesity, diabetes, or fun STDs he got from sleeping around so much. Could be one or the other or a combo of all. Who knows lol.

If I ever worked on a show that dealt with history I would try to keep it to the real facts and real people as close as possible and not make it what I call "Hollywoodized" since it can damage the image of the real people, events, or places that could be depicted in the show.

I think you have to accept that popular drama is rarely going to be completely accurate. It's done for entertainment and if all revues or interpretations were identical it would make pretty boring strings of TV & movies. They are entertainment "based" on historical facts , just like historical novels. This has been the case since the advent of movies.

With this time period not everything can be known anyway and adding a bit of spice makes it interesting. These shows can also inspire those not knowing to actually explore the reality and create an interest in history, part of the fun is finding out the inacuracies, but some of the things could have happened, even if they didn't.

Even recent history is re-interpretted for TV specials and movies. We had a very good TV production on Margaret Thatcher recently, but even that was not totally correct , so poetic licence is always used to dramatic effect.

Hopefully though, it will inspire those with enquiring minds to investigate the truth more .

Some of it is fun but too much its like *looks at history books to make sure that happened* lol. Well they did their job on me! :p lol. There is NO WAY in hell that I was amused that they crammed a pregnancy in one episode on the Tudors. At least they could have carried it from one episode to the other. Historical fast forward can be somewhat stupid BUT with a show like that I understand why they might crunch stuff like that. Think with the shoots on location....the costuming....the props.....must be millions of Pounds or Euros to be produced!

yah Tudors not accurate but then again who would watch it if it was? The revenues would plummet and they wouldn't be able to make anything new..

The guy who made Tudors also made Elizabeth which is more accurate, good movie too

I think they obviously played the young looking Henry just to draw in a crowd of people. He should be the obese one that we see in artwork but they creatively chose not to go that direction.

Glam...I agree with you...I'm very anal about accuracy when it comes to history....I think most lovers of history are..lol.

However...for the common crowd...one has to sweeten the story to get the general masses to pay attention. As a historian...it is a compromise...trading some accuracies for...the chance to educate a wider audience.

I have come to accept...that if the overall story gets the bottom line truth out...then some sweetening is probably a good thing for the masses. For example, with Henry...the bottom line the series gives us...is also the truth about Henry...

Think of it as a teaser....the sweet dramatization of historical facts...often engages people enough that they start to research into the real historical facts or story.

Like I said...a compromise to maybe engage people to educate and enjoy history.

A good historian...gets the facts right....
A great historian...tells an interesting story that all love to listen to.

Still confuses me that they combine several people and events into one. Didn't make sense at all! lol

I agree IP! What did you think about the HBO series ROME? I haven't seen The Tudors but I think ROME did a nice job of combining (relatively) accurate history with enough soap-opera elements to catch the interest of people who really didn't know much about Roman History. It was a pretty expensive series to produce (originally for an English Network) so they only did 2 years - I enjoyed both and wish they did more. I thought it was pretty good.

Peace,

I only saw the first season (we call them series over here) of Rome. I think I found it got a bit too soapy, but it was well made. Might try it again if it's ever repeated.

Thinking of Henry VIII stuff watching the Other Boleyn Girl was pretty accurate BUT its technically known as being a movie based off of a historical fiction book.

Yeah it was soapy and the 2nd season wasn't quite as strong as the first "series";) but it tied up things nicely at the end. I would definately recommend ROME over The Tudors anyday!
