Hey Guys...It's ME Again...haha...just in one of those moods to share and I hope you don't mind....
OK...this is the story....
The other night, I had dinner with my sister Connie...and while having conversation with her...she got to talking about back in the day school adventures and she went on to share this story about a guy (Kevin) who was in my class but live in our neighborhood at that time which was a pretty small community and everyone basically knew each others' families so to speak. The thing is...all of my siblings are very light skinned that can basically be on the border of looking either Caucasian or Asian with sprinkles of color in them depending upon which sibling. While my sister and I are considered the "dark ones" of the bunch considering the fact that we are not dark...we are caramel colored individuals but standing next to my other siblings...we are considered to be "dark". This never bothered or concerned me but I was surprised to learn at dinner that this was an issue with her.
She went on to say that when we were in school...she and her friend of hers at that time has stopped by one of the local corner stores and while she was still shopping, her friend was waiting for her outside and over heard Kevin asking her friend why Connie was dark and our sister Robin was so light skinned? Connie told me that by hearing this, it hurt her feelings but she kept it inside and how she had heard this from other kids throughout her school years and how it affected her in so many ways for the worst. Recently, she told me that when she went to pick up her car from the auto body shop, she hopped on one of the community circulators that would take you and drop you off to local destinations. Nonetheless, the driver she discovered was Kevin and she said that he initiated a friendly greeting towards her and she responded pretty cold at him. She said that she noticed him staring at her through his rear view mirror because he was dumfounded at her reaction. She went on to say that after a few stops, she was the only passenger on this circulator and because of this, Kevin decided to pull the bus over to a parking area and asked her if he could talk to her for a moment. She agreed and he went on to ask her why she was so cold towards him? She shared with him the incident and she told me that he was surprised that she was so upset over that. Needless to say, he apologized and asked her to please accept it wholeheartedly. He also told her that he was a kid and he did and said a lot of silly and stupid things but that does not mean that he is still that person as an adult. I was somewhat taken aback by this because this occurred almost twenty years ago and like Kevin said...we were kids...and I have had a lot of things said to me as a kid in school by bullies that at that time ...it hurt...but as the years progressed and I got older...I could care less and on top of it all...I rarely see those idiots...so to say the least, I was stunned that she still harbored anger over that. Furthermore...what I failed to comprehend to is that Kevin skin tone is very dark...so I did not understand why she took such a strong offense over what he said and she is considered very light skinned standing next to him. In conclusion...am I wrong to feel this way over what she shared with me??? ...as always...thanks to all who read and comment on this post...JW
