The movie was so in your face in the beginning that I almost quit watching - it reminds me of what Ryan Murphy does on Glee where every character tells everything that goes on and explains all of what he/she feels which is a real turn off for me. But by the middle, it got its groove when Jim Parsons was at a funeral, talking about the deaths of his friends and Mark Ruffalo's character begin to slide through the cracks.
But overall the movie was great. I never lived in that era but I see now why the producers (winks at Brad Pitt*) had to tell this story. It is a pretty powerful piece that I think every gay guy needs to watch. I was a wreck after watching it but at least I know that this virus can be managed now and people are talking and researching about it, hopefully to find a cure in the future or at least prevent it more effectively from spreading further.

Yes, for now, mercifuly, but the threat of drug resistance is always lurking. This is a cunning virus, always trying to evolve it's way past our attempts to beat it. The nightmare is that our available treatments lose their potency. No one can promise that such a nightmare won't come true, if it does then it'll be 1987 all over again. New drugs will be developed but they take such a long time to get to market. Don't want to scare you, lads, or maybe I do, if only for long enough for you to think "is bareback really worth the risk?"
