The international pressure did help! The president of Malawi, Bingu wa Mutharika, pardoned Steven Monjeza and Tiwonge Chimbalanga. I think we should show a deep respect for the Secretary General of the United Nations Ban Ki-moon who invested great personal efforts to get the Gay couple free. He is my hero today.
The thought that so many Gay people live in a hostile environment is sad. We can only hope that the international attention this ridiculous sentence got may help to change the situation step by step.

Yeah, so now that they're free they've gone into hiding out of fear that some self righteous sack of shit will find and kill them. Of coarse the police will not be protecting them and given the culture, I give it about a month before they are killed and if the culprit is captured, he will probably do less than three years. But we will never know because the story will be suppressed by the government...

So are they any better off now?

I don't mean to say that they will be killed by the government. What I mean is that now that their names and faces have been spread all over by the media, and without protection they are now in danger from all those fine upstanding citizens whom believe they are an abomination before God and must be destroyed. Releasing them back into society is like putting a lamb in a lions den...

About the only way for them to be safe is for some foreign country to grant them amnesty as political refugees, but since they were pardoned by their government, that's unlikely to happen. Thus leaving them at the mercy of a less than understanding society...:(

I think that in a way you all are right in your opinions. But their situation in jail was worse. They were surrounded by brutal criminals who despised them. So did the guards. And no way to go. Let us be happy that they could at least escape that situation.
For some reason (10 years ago) I hate politics and politicians. So I do not interfere with politics anymore. But sometimes you feel that there are moments where it would be indecent and cowardly not to interfere. For me this was such a moment.

I believe they should move out of the country now when they're free again. Just because of their own safety.
