Mine crashed on January 20, but it turned out to be my Windows Vista OS, not any hardware problem. So I had Windows 7 installed, and it's true what everybody says, it's head & tails above Vista.

I keep all my files on an external HD, so I didn't lose anything except all my emails; luckily I had my contacts list on paper so I was able to reenter them. Now I B/U my emails, so yes, you CAN teach an old dog new tricks.

It's a good idea to reinstall your operating system and drivers once a year or so just to keep things fresh. Also, it's not until after a good formatting of your hard disk that you realize just how much of the shit you had on there was useless.

All of my important documents are on flash drive and/or phone and/or in the so-called "cloud." Keeping them just on the computer is begging for trouble.

As for Win 7, I agree that it's great. I'm running 32-bit Ultimate and if you were to sit at my desk and use it, you'd never know it's running on a 6 year old computer.

EDIT: Also thought to add another tidbit. For the love of god, don't just leave your porn and "intimate" photos or anything else even the least bit incriminating or embarrassing on your computer. When I work on computers, I will never touch a file I don't have to touch and respect privacy. That said, there are cases when that data has to be handled or is simply stumbled upon. Also, having worked in a few computer shops in the past, I've seen many paid techs out there will snoop for entertainment. Basically, if feasible, don't have anything on your hard drive you wouldn't want another person seeing. You never know when you might find yourself in a situation that requires letting a professional nerd wrench around on your box.

Absolutely, that's why I keep everything on an external HD. And not just embarrassing stuff, but anything at all that you wouldn't want a stranger to see: bank info, calendar events, Word documents, etc.

I had tried once reformatting but was still having the same problems. Honestly I thought it was a hardware problem, that's why I took it to a tech, but he said it all checked out fine. He also said Vista isn't even supported anymore, so it was obviously time to upgrade. Haven't had a problem since.

Always risky to let anyone else wrench around on your box, professional or not....

And remember Gary Glitter. Not that I would accuse anyone here of downloading child porn, but I'm pretty sure many people here DO download things that are, strictly speaking, illegal to download. Not because it's porn, but because of copyright issues.

-----------------
Edit:
For those who don't know, Gary Glitter took his computer to a computer technician to fix. The tech found thousands of pornographic images of children on the hard drive, and dobbed him in to the police, resulting in a lengthy gaol sentence.

I wish people wouldn't leave their nudie-pics on their computers. Where I work I often have to move client data to a new computers. Many times I have found intimate photos that the client didn't think were still on there or their spouse put them there. I have one client who must be in her 70's and I stumbled across a directory that was full of pics her husband must of taken of her posing in their shower. She honestly looked like a drowned rat with flat saggy boobs. It was not pretty. And thats something I wish I could get out of my head. Thumbnail previews turned on, I thought it was some collection her husband downloaded so I made the mistake of clicking on one and discovered it was actually my client... So I try not to ever look at a picture unless it's necesssary.
But sometimes they leave the personal pics right on the desktop. I dont get that.
