I've seen scam pop-ups that pretend to be Australian Federal Police (since I'm from Australia) and "lock your computer" - (you just need to exit the browser via task manager). It's highly unlikely that it's the FBI, just a scam that makes you pay money so it will "unlock" your computer.

Probably best to avoid that picture host/website however.

Yes i got that FBI warning pop-up on my computer once when i was on a website i found for DepositFiles Premium Link Generator, it was one that was pretending to be Australian Federal Police, if you get one don't pay for it cause its a scam, just follow regnomraw advice and close your web browser via task manager or just restart your computer.

Hi xelp

Its alright, there's is no need to apologies and No, it's not stupid at all, have a look this website that talks about what i and regnomraw and many others got on our web browsers >
You must click 'Like' before you can see the hidden data contained here
< There are different kinds of these, this is just the ones that Australian internet users get, It might be different or similar around the world as well.

and about that, I always have the latest virus definition updates on my antivirus software, so I'm always protected when surfing the web.

It's called "Ransom Ware" and be careful, there's a particularly nasty version that locks up your computer completely. It activates on start-up and you cant get into anything, not files, settings, control panel, system restore, nothing...

My 11 yo niece got that one (don't know how...) and all I could do to get rid of it was wipe the hard drive clean...

It sounds like a version of what we in Sweden call "police virus", which has become one of the the most usual type of virus :(.

Yes, a friend had that too, a german one.
They told him to go to next filling-station to buy some kind of credits there to unlock his computer. It took a bit to convince him that the "police" would not do such a thing. We set back the clock on the computer and so erased the virus.

I got the FBI version of this three times: first time - trying to watch a stream of a tv show, that I was able to unlock the browser I forget how. Second time - trying to download a file, that one locked up the whole computer although I was able to transfer some files to an external hard drive before the thing totally took over and I had to wipe out the hard drive and start over. Third time - trying to save a picture off of a blog (won't be visiting them again), I was able to do a system restore and I reset the modem (may have done this the first time too). The second time was the nasty version - I actually had to have a service technician come out. I have the virus protection and I got full time malware protection after the second time but I guess it can still happen.

Yes, I was not the one who opened the attachement or visited the unsecure site, it was my friend.

Yesterday I got an urgent message from ebay. They needed me to retype my passwort because someone stole form my account. I did as they asked of course but I was a little surprised since I don't have an ebay account. :D

I was getting the American version this past week on the site called "Midnight Desires".
There's a thread I like there, but I'll stay away.
I'm a little surprised that my virus protection hasn't been blocking it for me.

Even in Italy it spread by some the time this "Alert Police" with block of PC, but fortunately it was possible to eliminate with Task Manager.
