What is everyone around here planning for New Years Eve?

For me, New Years Eve will probably be a quiet day in which I try to sleep off a hangover as I'm running things a day early since one of my friends has to be at work New Years Day. Friday night, I'm having some friends I regularly hang out with over here and we're going to have a nice big barbeque like we've been doing here once a month for a little while now. Some beer, hamburgers, steak, bratwurst, whatever else we see at the supermarket that looks nice. Then later, we'll travel to this one friend's apartment to enjoy a bottle of Crown, vodka and whatever else we all spring for while watching B movies and attempting to play games on the xBox. This was originally planned as my Christmas party but two of my friends and I had a nasty cold that forced us to postpone.

Every year I get together with a couple of friends and we go see whatever the big movie is that year (Mission Impossible, this year). It's always easy to get in because everyone else is out to dinner or at a party. Then we go for coffee and then head home. Usually I'm in bed with a book by 11pm and I turn on one of the TV broadcasts in the background (Andersen Cooper - yum!) At midnight, I have a beverage of choice and then turn out the lights.

This year I will be squeezing in an appearance at a co-workers party. I'll stop by about 10:30 and leave at 11.

I have lots of pressure in my job, so I like my off time to be as stress-free as possible. No big loud parties in fancy clothes, or being seen at the coolest embassy ball. Been there, done that. Just some cheesy entertainment with good friends, and talk over coffee - I'm happy.

Gonna have dinner with big families. After that maybe watching some movies...not decided yet what movies I will buy and watch. Maybe horrors, thriller or romantic comedy movies. Any suggestion people?

I recommend Hellraiser if you don't already have it.

Thank you, seen it a few years ago on tv, quite scary I guess.
How about some 20'th (year not production house) centuries movies. A really scary movie or detective thriller movie would be fine.

Probably lots of loud 50's rock & roll - pretty much like a normal evening :p

I hate New Year and can't understand why everyone gets so excited over it.

I'm obviously getting an old miserable grump :))

I've been to a number of Xmas lunches/dinners over the past month, but my Xmas was a quiet one and I expect New Year's Eve to be the same.

My straight friend who lives nearby is alone and single like myself, so we generally get together on Xmas Day and again on NYE. A couple of times we have wandered in Northbridge (the main central nightclub area of Perth) to imbibe the ambience and have ended up totally bored, so now we tend to stay in unless there is something advertised that really takes our interest.

I used to think that staying home on New Year's Eve was intolerable. For many years I used to fly up to San Francisco and celebrate with a friend (not a lover). We'd go out to dinner and then hit the bars and usually run into a dozen friends from Southern Calif who had done the same thing. Now the friend and I have both moved on to other things and I don't find the holiday as exciting as I did once.

A few times I got up early on New Year's Day to go to the Rose Parade in Pasadena. but it the traffic is such a mess that getting to the parade and getting out of town afterwards it's just not worth it. It's better on TV.

There often seems to be an air of desperation about the Eve. Too many people drinking too much and determined to have a good time. For the most part all they'll end up with is a helluva hangover the next morning.

So, I'll stay home and listen to Jim Svedja's (a local radio host) New Year's Eve Bash. He plays some very funny comedy albums, some of which are quite raunchy. If there are going to be fireworks from the Queen Mary, I'll go up to the roof deck on top of the building to watch them and wish a few neighbors Happy New Year. I don't mind a quiet New Year's Eve now that I have reached My dotage.

HAPPY NEW YEAR TO EVERYONE AT GH AND BEST WISHES FOR SUCCESS AND SATISFACTION IN ALL YOU DO IN 2012.

We live and learn - you sound just like me. I never go anywhere on New Years Eve, too many people determined to have a good time , how anyone can being crushed into a packed bar I don't know!

I have my own music, a shop across the road if i fancy a drink, and I sit and feel sorry for all those fools who think they're enjoying themselves :p

Will be spending it with my partner and some friends at our place. Don't like making a big deal and going out drinking. Its for me better to be able to chat with mates and not worry about who is in a fit state to be driving home. Most years I went camping which has also always been fun. Camp fire over fire works for me any day!

I am definitely younger than you are and trust me I hate New Year (in fact I hates christmas too lol).

As I said before, I'm from a very aristocratic high achieving families, therefore Christmas and new year are both an occasion for family to gloat over their accomplishment over the year, congratulate the new parents if there was any and (obviously comparing their children). I have broke free from that crap a while ago when I became father at 20 and decided to spent Christmas with my direct family, no aunts, cousins, uncles or unrelated people, just me, my children, girlfriend of the time, mom, sisters, and yes one aunt that happen to invite herself anyway LOL.

New year, I normally just go at a friend, where few friends (and I have to know them all, one stranger and I stay right the fuck home ) gather together, listen to oldies 50-60, 70's, 80's music, most of us play music so we jam, we drink like crazies, eat like pigs, and sleep like babies afterward.

But this year, Blondy locks wants to have a party at our house, but he will respect our tradition of having only known friends around. In fact, new year is just a reason to get all together for the new year and jives, and NO we are not doing the decount when the new year arrive, we're already way too drunk to even know what comes after 3 :)). And the next day Alex and I make breakfast for the whole bunch, and yes being raised as a French dude, I would already have a glass of wine in my hands at 8am. No matter how much I drank the day before, my top sleeping hours are 6hr.

My buddy lives downstairs from me. He's working tonight, but when he gets home, we'll walk over to the local bar. It used to be a Boston Irish bar; now everyone is welcome.
So a few hours of fun and then we'll stagger home.
Happy New Year everyone!
