problem with joining

I have recently had an occasional problem with file joining. For example, I have just downloaded 'Tentations de Sodome' posted by asia on 07-07-10. I have the correct number of files and they are all the correct size; I can open and view the first file with GOM or other programs. However, when I try to join with hjsplit or cheshire cat, I only get the first file in the joined product. I had a similar problem when I downloaded a vintage clip from another group although in this case I was unable to open the first file. My computer has an i-5 CPU, a 64-bit operating system and I used IE8 browser with the InPrivate setting.
Can anyone suggest what is going wrong?
