Program for editing videos

I need to take out a single scene from a movie (.avi, .mp4 etc.) to get a video. I use Media Player classic to get thumbnails but I do not think it can be used to cut a part of the file. Can anyone suggest me a free program which does it?

There are several you could try. Virtual Dub... Windows Movie Maker... Avidemux...Axara Video Converter... Total Video Converter

Some of them, Avidemux for example will only work with avi. files not mp4. etc

You may already have Windows Movie Maker on your computer as part of your Microsost/Windows bundle

Thank you for your answer Slimjim. I already tried with Windows Movie Maker but the file I get a .MSWMM file which I can't save as .avi or other extensions, the only option available to save the file is as .MSWMM.
I'll try with one of the programs you suggest.

Shame about the link... you could try googling AoA Advanced X Video Converter and see what comes up.

Much easier to use a program which does not change any part of your original video - which recoding certainly will - but just takes out the chunk you want removed.

For avis and .wmvs try Solveig's MM or for .wmv only try WMP Trimmer which sits inside Windows Media Player.

You can 'work around' its need to buy/register.

Or use freeware. Free Video Dub is one. But only for .avi files. It won't handle .wmvs.

Like most free progs, it offers you an annoying toolbar - just make sure you untick all the boxes.

No offence to anyone but blindly Googling for any software isn't a good idea. That's how PCs get infected by programs with hidden malware attached. Go to a reliable download site or the author's home page whenever you can.:

Free Video Dub 1.8.10 is way down towards the bottom of the page

Simple to use. All you need to bother with are the two 'scissor' symbols - left for where you want the removed part to begin, and right for where you want the removed part to end.







Once they are set, the two black upward-facing arrows appear to mark out the part you want removed. The 'X' icon becomes active to let you know it's ready to cut. Then just hit 'Save video' and it will put the edited vid into your chosen directory

Done.

No recoding. No getting into an almighty mess.

Forget all the above....There's a freeware cutter from Solveig which sounds just what you need for AVIs and MKVs.

I highly recommend VirtualDub, which SlimJim has already mentioned. It's a free program and very easy to master:

One factor to consider with video editing software is the speed. Some of them do a great job but are very slowwwwww. VirtualDub is very speedy and the output quality matches the input.

Any Video Converter, works very good , easy to use, you can split , convert video format, Atube Catcher if you want to join the videos, Video Pad Editor , both are free to use (if you want pro you need to buy it, but still works fine) I dont think u need something sophisticated. you can download them from free programs links.
