Hi all -
I have a number of .avi and .wmv full movies, and really I only want to keep one or two scenes from most of them.

Are there any programs out there that allows you to splice these files into segments? Free would be nice!

Thanks -

I use VirtualDub all the time and it generally only works with AVI movies.

If you have Windows Movie Maker, you can edit most WMV movies with that software. I believe WMM is bundled with Microsoft Office products.

I've never tried Virtual Dub, will have to give it a try. I've been using avidemux and it's very easy for non-computer savvy like me. But again, only avi. Though I've used the free Any Video Converter to convert some other types and then split.

Plugins for VirtualDub

Hello, everyone! (^_^)

I use VirtualDub all the time and it generally only works with AVI movies.

Actually, you can work with files other than AVI, but you must have the necessary plugins. :)

For instance, fccHandler's plugins allow you to work with MPEG-2 and WMV. Just make sure to view the Readme.txt files for the installation instructions.

Try Axara Video Converter. Or you can simply use Windows Movie Maker. The downside is it can only support Raw AVI video files.

If ur anal about quality like I am, look for a program that doesnt recode the video, like these "Video Converters"

Unfortunately, I'm not tech savvy. Instructions and I don't get along. I'm a learn-by-doing kind of bloke. I easily figured out VirtualDub, so if I could, anyone can. I hear things like "codec" and "plug ins" and I run for the hills.

I've done lots of WMV files with Windows Movie Maker. The program is incredibly slow, however. It sometimes takes a half hour to load a whole movie and 15 minutes to save a file, and that's on a fast machine.

Yeah, I know what you mean. I've been working with computers since practically prehistoric times (late 1980's), so I'm Ok with having to "dig deeper" into a program, if I have to. But most people don't need (or want) to... :)

As for the VirtualDub plugins, it's pretty easy to use them. Here's an example of the MPEG-2 plugin Readme.txt:

This zip contains both the 32-bit and 64-bit builds of the plugin. To use the 32-bit plugin, create a folder named "Plugins32" in VirtualDub's program folder, and place the "MPEG2.vdplugin" file into that folder. To use the 64-bit plugin, create a folder named "Plugins64" in VirtualDub's program folder, and place the "MPEG264.vdplugin" file into that folder. VirtualDub will find and use the plugins automatically.

Download the zip files, unzip them (extract de plugins), create the directories and copy the plugins. Pretty easy, right? ;)
