R.E.M. split up

After 31 years and 15 albums, R.E.M. have announced their retirement on their website.
I am personally very upset since I grew up listening to R.E.M. albums and songs like this:

they have given us so much great music, and unlike so many other long lived bands have never become a parody or pale imitation of what they once were.

so many great albums.... they have been a part of the soundtrack to my life

Oh no, it's one great band.
I must admit, it's only last year that i happen to hear one of their track and i really liked it and the band as well.

R.E.M. were a great band who deserved acclaim, and they got it.

There are many others who are just as deserving, but who miss out for some reason or other - poor marketing, lack of support from media, or because they don't have a drop-dead gorgeous lead singer.

Then there are other bands who continue year after year to trade on their fame and become parodies of themselves, as someone said earlier in this thread. No point in naming them, I don't want the thread to get all negative. Let's just be glad that R.E.M. leave us with a fine back catalogue and their reputation intact.

Having said that "Losing My Religion" is one of my favourite songs of all time.

R.E.M. have always been my favourite band and I'm sad they've decided to call it a day, but I think they never recovered from Bill Berry leaving.
What made them special was the chemistry between the four of them and it just wasn't the same band after that. I can't say I care for any of their records following New Adventures In Hi-Fi but they had a great run of 10 great albums (I even like Monster!).

oh no this is sad. R.E.M is such an icon. almost everybody knows who they are... i hope each band member will have success in their future endeavour
