That can be a big and potentially risky exercise. It is also different depending on type of computer and operating system. I would recommend you go to the website of your operating system (e.g. Microsoft) and search in their help section. Then make sure that is exactly what you want to do, before you do it. Make sure it is your best solution.

Re-formatting will ERASE EVERYTHING on your drives so you must make backups of ALL files, software etc. on to either DVDs or external harddrive. You will also loose all your personal settings. X_X

I suggest only doing it as a last resort.. if your PC is having problems have you tried all other solutions - Disk Scan/Check, etc?

As Nomad says check with your operating system help centre as reformatting an XP machine is done differently to Vista or a Mac.

Actually I just did this I reformatted my entire hard drive and reinstalled a fresh copy of windows. A few things to note. If you wipe the entire hard drive using an outside program it won't have any formatting at all and sometimes getting the install cd to boot can be hard. It takes time and you will lose everything you do not back up to a different hard drive.

on a note--sure you can format your hard drive and re-install windows and do as the others say back up everything then there is programs that you might have bought like nero norton or other programs that you have installed may give you a hassle

installing windows--insert disc- boot computer when says press key to boot disc--then when it gets to hard drives find drive you want to install it on format it and then continue--its easy just follow the steps

as for backing up stuff--- i keep all my downloaded videos music and other stuff destination to another drive as if windows crashes and hard drive needs replaced your other content will be on that seperate drive whether it being an external drive or another drive in pc

Are you trying to reformat a bootable system drive or just a spare HD?
