The mayor of Reykjavik has dressed up in drag to mark the opening of the Icelandic capital's gay pride festival.
Jon Gnarr, a top comedian who became mayor in June, appeared on stage on Thursday night in a floral-print dress, blonde wig and bright red lipstick.
"The mayor unfortunately could not attend himself," he told the crowd.
Mr Gnarr's Best Party won the council elections after running on a platform that included free towels in swimming pools and a polar bear for the zoo.
Promising "sustainable transparency", its campaign videos featured candidates singing to the tune of Tina Turner's "Simply The Best".
Mr Gnarr said at the time that the victory signalled the mass discontent with politicians for their role in the country's economic crisis in 2008.
Addressing the opening ceremony of the gay pride festival on Thursday, his buxom alter ego said the mayor could not make it because he "was busy, even though he promised to be here".
"What might he be up to? Maybe he is visiting Moomin Valley," Mr Gnarr said, referring to the fictional setting of a series of Finnish children's stories that feature a family of white hippopotamus-like trolls.
"This is what we get for voting for a clown in elections," he added.
In 2009, Iceland became the first country with an openly gay head of government, when Johanna Sigurdardottir became prime minister.

Hmmmm....On one hand I think it's great the Mayor of one of the major cities in your country would go out of a fruity limb like that - shows he's open-minded and apparently has not electoral challenges in his future.

On the another hand....it's f*cking ICELAND!! Who wouldn't take off all their clothes and run around naked at a photo op just to "get the attention" of the rest of world. Dressing in drag seems like the LEAST they could do...Icelanders I know are a little weird anyway:p:)

Iceland happens to be a wonderful country, very friendly people, good food (if you like fish) and a gorgious nature, for gays it (seems) is a good place to live, same sex marriage is legal (unlike in most countries of the world) and the president is an (open) lesbian, besides that they are the oldest still working democraty in Europe, the Alþingi(parlement) dates back to the year 960. If you have a weekend to spare it deffinatly is worth a visit :)

It was a joke? hmm...

here is the wheather:

The climate of Iceland's coast is subpolar oceanic. The warm North Atlantic Current ensures generally higher annual temperatures than in most places of similar latitude in the world. Regions in the world with similar climate include the Aleutian Islands, the Alaska Peninsula and Tierra del Fuego, although these regions are closer to the equator. Despite its proximity to the Arctic, the island's coasts remain ice-free through the winter. Ice incursions are rare, the last having occurred on the north coast in 1969.[40]

There are some variations in the climate between different parts of the island. Generally speaking, the south coast is warmer, wetter and windier than the north. The Central Highlands are the coldest part of the country. Low-lying inland areas in the north are the most arid. Snowfall in winter is more common in the north than the south.

The highest air temperature recorded was 30.5 °C (86.9 °F) on 22 June 1939 at Teigarhorn on the southeastern coast. The lowest was −38 °C (−36.4 °F) on 22 January 1918 at Grímsstaðir and Möðrudalur in the northeastern hinterland. The temperature records for Reykjavík are 26.2 °C (79.2 °F) on 30 July 2008, and −24.5 °C (−12.1 °F) on 21 January 1918.
