A few months ago I got a message on Manhunt from someone out in California. It wasn't anything sexual, it was just general chat about life, love, work, etc. It was really engaging and we eventually started chatting on Skype (text chat).
Well, if you read the title you see where this is going. I'll be brief and just say that eventually I figured out he wasn't a real person, "he" was part of a group of scammers that took turns chatting with people on Skype to try and get money or material goods from them.
It's really put me off dating websites. I still use them sometimes, but if the person says something the scammer said, I just shut down because I'm afraid.
Which sucks because it used to be where I was most comfortable meeting people. Bars are lame (and expensive) and while there's lots of gay social groups, I don't do great in groups.
I'm looking for advice here. Do I need to let go of the fear that I'm going to get scammed again? Do I need to find a new outlet for meeting guys?
