It seems hard to believe but 20 years ago tomorrow I was so excited waking up that unseasonably warm beautiful day. It was the first day of a new job at a well-known law firm on the 34th floor in downtown SF and whether you liked baseball or not, the whole Bay Area was in a frenzy with the San Francisco Giants and Oakland A's playing each other in the World Series. Well, little did anyone know how fucked up it would get shortly after 5 pm. When it hit, I was thrown off my feet and the wall farthest from me actually hit me and the other wall hit me on the way back. OMG I was like a fucking rag doll. Then when things stopped and while fires were raging around the City and across the Bay, which you could see from our windows, everyone was consoling each other but no one knew the new boy yet so there I was like freaking out but no one to freak with . Eventually, we had to walk down 34 floors into streets that were just totally bizerk. The rest of the day and night was insane.
Well, there's plenty of stuff to be googled that shows the destruction. But I wanted to share this one picture I took of the Cypress Freeway in Oakland, which collapsed and was just minutes from my house. Over 40 people were killed in the collapse and I knew several from my neighborhood so the anniversary is always a sad reminder. You will note in the picture that both sides of the freeway have collapsed and the driver of that truck was one lucky fucking dude. How he stopped is beyond me....but thankfully he did.
