I prefer semi-big towns, with good urban planning, good libraries, well-funded public transportation, big botanically sophisticated parks, clean air, big organic farmers markets, and a diverse, tolerant community that includes political action and plenty of creativity. Big cities are too ugly, unequal, and polluted for me, and the really small towns in the middle of nowhere do nothing for me. I guess I grew up in a small town, (/rural development maze - as I didn't live in town) and one which was almost completely dedicated to serving/attracting tourists who came in from NYC and NJ, what a disgusting place!
