* In America, more than 32,000 people die by suicide each year (2005 Centers for Disease Control and Prevention).
* Suicide is one of the top three causes of death among 15 to 24-year-olds; only accidents and homicide occur more frequently (2006 National Adolescent Health Information).
* Suicide is the second leading cause of death among college campuses (2008 Centers for Disease Control and Prevention).
* For every completed suicide by a young person, it is estimated that 100 to 200 attempts are made (2003 Youth Risk Behavior Surveillance Survey).
* Lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and questioning youth are up to four times more likely to attempt suicide than their heterosexual peers (Massachusetts 2006 Youth Risk Survey).
* Lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and questioning youth who come from a rejecting family are up to nine times more likely to attempt suicide than their heterosexual peers (2007 San Francisco State University Chavez Center Institute).

Warning Signs:

* A tendency toward isolation and social withdrawal
* Substance abuse
* Expression of negative attitudes toward self
* Expression of hopelessness or helplessness
* Loss of interest in usual activities
* Giving away valued possessions
* Expression of a lack of future orientation (i.e. "It won't matter soon anyway").
* For someone who has been very depressed, when that depression begins to lift, the individual may be at INCREASED risk of suicide, as the individual will have the psychological energy to follow-through on suicidal ideation.

Some Facts About Suicide:

Suicide is often caused by a person's deep depression that is brought on by people posting pictures of the person on websites and making fun of them.

Hammer....don't hurt them...:(

"* Expression of a lack of future orientation"
Is that when you express that you have no plans to be gay, str8, or bi in the future?;)

He didn't say anything, it was mainly a "goodnight" , just not an appropriate post for the thread.

It wasn't anything bad, Thor never posts anything bad (well apart from his post about shit LOL :p ) it just didn't seem to fit with the subject matter, so I removed it.

Sorry Thor, but you posted "goodnight" in another thread ;)

Thanks so much Hammervice for your post. As someone who's been affected intimately by suicide, I can't begin to tell you how important it is that suicide is recognized for what it is....a leading killer especially of youth and more specifically gay youth. After my lover committed suicide, and after I was able to function, I became involved in numerous suicide prevention and suicide survivor groups and once I found the strength/nerve to tell my story in front of everyone, despite the fact no other stories involved anyone gay, slowly but surely more and more people would come up to me, thank me for my story and tell me that they feared that thier son/daughter, brother/sister, husband/wife, or father/mother was also gay but for one reason or another they would never disclose it to anyone. The saddest moments were of mothers bearing their souls and telling me of how the dad would berate, scorn, ignore or outright reject his son/daughter and only then after the death to forbid anyone from acknowledging the real reason. This is why the numbers dont even tell the real story. The social stigma surrounding suicide is truly at the core of the problem, not to mention the lack of compassion in our society. Education is key and so I thank you for posting the information.

For those interested the American Foundatioin for Suicide Prevention sponsers community walks throughout the Country all year long. For anyone in Chicago, its annual "Out of the Darkness" overnight walk is scheduled for next week, June 27-28 and is an amazing experience. Little by little these events will tell the true story and bring to light the horrible impact of scorn, depression, mental illness, exclusion and bigotry has on so many people especially so many young people. For more information the website is www.sfp.org. Thanks again Hammervice...sorry for rattling so long...lol
